BBC Radio 2 has the inside story on The Beatles' White Album
To mark the 40th anniversary of The White Album (released on 22 November 1968) the producers, engineers and technicians who worked alongside The Beatles take a journey back in time to recall the process of recording this seminal LP.
The album of 30 songs, officially titled The Beatles but more commonly known as The White Album, was recorded between 30 May 1968 and 14 October 1968, largely at Abbey Road Studios. The sessions were undisciplined and sometimes fractious, taking place at a time when creative differences were growing in the band and The Beatles' business empire was expanding with the launch of Apple Corps.
The sessions also marked the first appearance in the studio of John Lennon's new girlfriend, Yoko Ono, who would thereafter be a more or less constant presence at all Beatle sessions. The individual Beatles had previously been very insular during recording sessions, with influence from outsiders strictly limited.
Despite the album's official title, which emphasised group identity, studio efforts captured the work of four increasingly individual artists who frequently found themselves at odds. The band's work pattern changed dramatically with this project – it was not uncommon for the group to record through the night – and sometimes Paul McCartney would record in one studio for prolonged periods of time, while Lennon recorded in another.
At one point, drummer Ringo Starr walked out on the band for two weeks, explaining later that he felt his role was minimised, compared to that of the other members. In his absence, McCartney played drums on two tracks: Back In The USSR and Dear Prudence. Upon his return, Starr's drum kit was decorated with red, white and blue flowers, a welcome-back gesture from Harrison.
Critical response to the album at the time was mixed. Some tracks were immediately accessible while others, such as Revolution #9 and Helter Skelter, highlighted the increasing emphasis on studio experimentation.
Brilliant as it is, the album marked the beginning of the end for The Beatles and this programme provides a fascinating insight into this slice of rock history. Contributors include producers George Martin, Chris Thomas and Ken Scott as well as Noel Gallagher, Ricky Wilson, Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and Jamie Cullum.

Lucy Duran introduces Nigerian Afrobeat star Femi Kuti and his band, The Positive Force, who perform at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3. Femi Kuti's new album, Day By Day, is a tribute to his father, legendary Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who would have been 70 this year. Fela Kuti died in 1997, having established a new genre, Afrobeat, which blended African rhythms and raw energy with influences from jazz and rock.
Femi is the second son of Fela's first wife. He followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a singer, songwriter and saxophonist, and joined his band as a teenager. He has since taken his own band, The Positive Force, across the world, developing his father's Afrobeat style, and maintaining his concern for social issues. The concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London was recorded for World Routes on 14 November.

Opera On 3 – Matilde di Shabran

Last heard at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in 1854, Matilde di Shabran disappeared from the repertoire for over 80 years, but productions in recent years have shown it to be one of Rossini's most wonderful scores, full of large ensembles and a tremendous dramatic vitality.
Rossini described Matilde di Shabran, premiered in 1821, as a "melodramma giocoso", a tragicomedy containing elements of both comedy and pathos. Much of the time the buffoonery predominates, particularly when it involves the travelling minstrel Isidoro, a man incapable of taking anything seriously.
The opera centres on Corradino, who refers to himself as "Heart of Iron", but who's actually a petty tyrant, misogynist and hypochondriac. "He who enters unwelcome will have his neck broken" is the cheerful message engraved on the wall of his gloomy castle. At first, Corradino hates everybody, especially women and poets, but by the end he is smitten by love and gets the girl. She's Matilde, a charmer with a ready answer for everything. Pathos is provided by Edoardo, imprisoned in the castle, and evil by the Countess, who continually thwarts Matilde and manages to put a spanner in the works almost to the very end.
This production stars tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who burst onto the international opera scene in 1996 when he replaced an indisposed singer in the role of Corradino in Matilde di Shabran at the Pesaro Rossini Festival. Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak takes the title role, with the Royal Opera House orchestra and chorus conducted by Carlo Rizzi.

When Silence Sings is a sonic reflection on how we listen to everyday life and sounds.
Tonie, who was profoundly deaf from birth, was brought up in rural Norway and did not learn to speak until she was five years old – and has been living in Venice for the past 12 years. She walks through the city she now calls home, and remembers her father taking her out to feel the wind and the spray from the waterfalls as a small child, creating complex acoustic set-ups in the garden with the aim of amplifying the vibrations in nature in order to help her understand the concept of sound and words.
For Tonie, these walks in the Telemark mountains gave resonance to an inner world. Fifty years later, and now equipped with digital "ears", Tonie's enthusiasm and passion for her acoustic environment have not died and have led her to explore further her particular way of hearing.
Tonie introduces a multi-levelled acoustic Venice: drinking fragolino (a strawberry alcohol) in her local bar, chugging down the canals on a motorboat, taking a trip on a sandolo, reflecting with an Armenian priest and going on a visit to the Rialto food market. Blending Tonie's memories, observations and experiences with atmospheres and sound, When Silence Sings is a contemplative audio walk that invites listeners to re-examine how people listen to their everyday lives.

Stephanie Beacham is a class act in the school for murderers
With an all-star cast including Stephanie Beacham, Mark Benton and Graham Crowden, Mark Gatiss's adaptation of Pamela Branch's novel is packed full of ironic wit and quirky Britishness.
A group of dodgy individuals have banded together to form the Asterisk Club – a refuge for murderers who "got away with it". The Asterisk Club's founder, Clifford Flush, hasn't murdered anyone for years but, when the urge comes upon him to kill his bridge partner, and following an unsavoury incident involving a no.19 bus to Finsbury Park, he and the other members of the Club are forced to leave London in a hurry.
Far away from the city, in the rural hamlet of Krunte Abbas, the Asterisk Club opens a Murder School, teaching classes in grips, knots, electricity and alibis to eager students, including a romantic novelist, her lover and a Mafia hitman looking for a refresher course. All is going swimmingly until someone has the effrontery to be murdered on the premises.
The cast also includes David Ryall, John Castle, Simon Williams, Barbara Kirby, Ian Hallard, Cal Jaggers and Mark Gatiss himself.

The late Kenny Everett, remembered on the 40th anniverary of his first BBC Radio 1 show
On the 40th anniversary of Kenny Everett's first BBC Radio 1 show, music journalist Mark Paytress reassesses the pioneering audio work of the DJ and looks at his place in broadcasting history.
Through interviews and an unprecedented collection of extremely rare archive material, Here's Kenny explores Everett's colourful presenting style and lifts the lid on the broadcaster's true private passion.
Everyone remembers Kenny Everett as a funny-man of the airwaves and television, whose confused private life took a tragic turn when he was diagnosed with Aids in 1993. He died two years later. Few know him as the extraordinary radio pioneer who would spend days at home creating wonderfully original jingles and trailers using techniques that were familiar only to avant-garde musicians and, much later, sampler fiends and hip-hop producers. His extraordinary approach to his work also came to the attention of The Beatles, who later invited him to "produce" two of the most avant-garde (and little heard) records in their catalogue.
Interviewees featured in the programme include Tony Blackburn, Keith Skues, pirate radio fans Chris Dannatt, Chris Baird, Stuart Russell and Jon Myer, and Beatles expert Richard Porter.
