Trevor Nelson is on hand with another hour of the best in soulful music.
The Album of the Week is Very Special by Debra Laws. This was her 1981 debut album and was produced by her brothers, Hubert and Ronnie Laws, both of whom were performers on the jazz scene in the Eighties through their associations with Earth, Wind & Fire.
Following the success of the lead single from the album, which received widespread radio airplay, Laws toured around the US and abroad for the following nine years. As a result of this extensive touring, Laws had the opportunity to collaborate with Motown and funk legends incuding The Commodores, Kool And The Gang and Shabba Ranks.
Other music tonight includes No Greater Love by New Colours, Brass Construction's Moving and Aaliyah's Rock The Boat.

Composer Of The Week –
Michael Haydn Ep 3/5
Monday
17 to Friday 19 November
12.00-1.00pm BBC RADIO 3 |
Michael Haydn's place in history has been little more than a footnote in the biography of his celebrated older brother, Joseph. However, this week, Donald Macleod places Michael in the spotlight.
Today's programme sees a major change in Haydn's life, with the arrival on the scene of the new archbishop of Salzburg, Hieronymus Colloredo – Mozart's controversial one-time patron and antagonist. Colloredo instituted a radical programme of reform that kept Haydn busy producing new music for the liturgy. Perhaps as a direct result, he composed relatively little chamber music – the Notturno in G for string quintet is one of the finest examples.
The programme concludes with Haydn's comic singspiel, Der baßgeiger zu wörgl, an earthy farce in which a drunken husband teaches his nagging wife a lesson.

Performance On 3 – Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment
Wednesday 19 November 7.00-9.15pm BBC RADIO 3
The Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment returns to its roots with a concert of music by Viennese masters Mozart and Beethoven, led by their Emeritus Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras. Works include the sprightly Overture and four arias written by Mozart for his opera, The Marriage Of Figaro.
The Coronation Mass and the Symphony No. 32 were both written in 1779, shortly after Mozart returned from his disastrous trip to Paris and his employment with the Archbishop of Salzburg. Beethoven completes the programme, with his bucolic Pastoral Symphony and its musical impressions of nature and rustic life.
The main evening performance is followed by a chance to hear another of the five sectional finalists of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2008. Tonight includes music by Richard Michael from his Jazz Vibes Suite, performed by percussion section winner Jim Molyneux.

Tonight's Essay is by Adam Kuper, Fellow of the British Academy. Modern anthropology is underpinned by the idea that an individual's beliefs and activities should be understood in terms of their own culture. But, in an age of globalisation and multiculturalism, Adam Kuper questions the validity of this notion.

The Lament Of The SS Mendi
Wednesday 19 November 11.00-11.30am BBC RADIO 4
Award-winning poet Jackie Kay tells the story of one of the worst wartime disasters in British maritime history.
In 1917, on its final leg of the voyage from Cape Town to France, South African troop ship SS Mendi sank in 20 minutes, with the loss of more than 600 men – most of whom were black.
The Mendi disaster could have been avoided. The ship was hit by another Allied vessel, the Darro, going at full speed with zero visibility. In the immediate aftermath of the sinking, the crew on board the Darro did nothing to help save the drowning men – despite being able to hear their cries from the water. A proper explanation was never given for their inaction.
The programme includes interviews in South Africa with relatives of the men who died, as well as contributions from the South African High Commissioner in Britain and the diver who finally located the wreck. The programme culminates in a lament, especially commissioned to mark the dead of the Mendi.
