Composer Of The Week – Cavalli (1602-76) Ep 4/5
Monday 10 to Friday 14 November

In the late 1650s, Cavalli received the high honour of an invitation from Cardinal Mazarin to compose an opera for one of the dynastic and political events of the century – the marriage of Louis XIV of France. Things didn't go quite as well as Cavalli hoped, however. Donald Macleod takes listeners through the composer's ill-fated visit to France and his subsequent demise in the realms of opera.

Performance On 3 – BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Live from City Halls, Glasgow, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra launches its new Thursday night Russian Winter series with its Chief Conductor, Ilan Volkov.
The focus is on two composers, both giants of Russian music in the 20th century but with very different approaches: Stravinsky and Rachmaninov. Tonight's concert puts Rachmaninov's second piano concerto at the heart of the programme, with Louis Lortie as the soloist. It is framed by two of Stravinsky's later ballets: the Tchaikovsky-inspired Fairy's Kiss, commissioned for Ida Rubenstein's company, and the classically formed Scènes de Ballet.
Presenter/Petroc Trelawny, Producers/Simon Lord and Janet Tuppen

In 1964, some of America's greatest black musicians were brought to Britain to perform a series of concerts. The only one to be recorded took place at an old railway station in Manchester.
As the heavens opened and the rain came pouring down, Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee and Sister Rosetta Tharpe played to an audience who had never seen anything like it before.
Manchester had been one of the first places to enable American musicians to play – other promoters in Britain apparently saw no commercial potential in the black American music.
The importance of the Manchester concerts was enormous, as was their impact on home-grown talent in Britain.
As well as presenting rarely played material from the concert, the programme hears from those who were there, in the audience. And the tour manager, Joe Boyd, talks about how he handled some of these musical legends as they sampled UK life.

Cowards Ep 1/4

|
|
|
|
 |
The Cowards are a four-man sketch troupe who shun comedy caricature in favour of understated, naturalistic performance. Through their characterisations of small people in small situations, the team create a self-contained world that allows the laughs to emerge from their characters.
From Little John and Friar Tuck accusing Robin Hood of hooliganism, to Mike the ant who worries that he can't carry enough leaves to impress the girls, it is comedy of quirky discomfort and wry, left-field observations.
The format of the programme is very simple, with no running jokes, no repeating characters and no catchphrases – just the Cowards' unique take on the world in a series of laugh-out-loud-funny, stand-alone sketches.
The Cowards are Tim Key, Tom Basden, Lloyd Woolf and Stefan Golaszewski.
Producer/Victoria Lloyd
