The Afrobeat Revolutionary – Fela Kuti
Tuesday 4 November 10.30-11.30pm BBC RADIO 2
Neneh Cherry celebrates the life, music and influence of Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Kuti created a unique sound – Afrobeat, which combined traditional Yoruba rhythms with jazz and funk – but he was far more than a music star. He was a cultural revolutionary, who embraced black power and spoke out for the oppressed of Nigeria.
During a prolific recording career, Fela released more than 80 albums, on which he became an increasingly outspoken critic of corruption and the voice of Nigeria's "have-nots". He formed his own political party after his 78-year-old mother was killed during a raid on his club, and went on to run (unsuccessfully) for president.
In 1984, Fela was imprisoned on charges of currency smuggling, but was freed a year later following the support of Amnesty International and artists including Sir Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. He was arrested again in 1997 on a marijuana charge, but a public outcry secured his release.
On 2 August 1997, after years of persecution, Fela Kuti died. Over a million people lined the streets of Lagos for the funeral and the city ground to a standstill for 48 hours. Today, his musical legacy lives on through his sons – Femi and Seun – while his daughter runs the Afrika Shrine club in Lagos which Fela built to showcase his music and give opportunities to local musicians. Every October, a "Fela-bration" takes place in Lagos and this year, which would have marked his 70th birthday, will be a particularly important celebration.
Contributors to the programme include: Fela's children; Rikki Stein, his manager for more than 15 years; Sandra Isidore, who introduced Fela to the Black Panther movement in Los Angeles; drummer Tony Allen; and slam poet Saul Williams.

C's Election Night BBQ Special
Tuesday 4 November 11.00-11.30pm BBC RADIO 4
On the night of the US presidential election, country legend and presidential hopeful Tina C is in her Winnebago with nothing but a few country songs, a burst balloon and a bit of ticker tape to keep her company.
Tina assesses her chances of becoming President, calls Barack Obama and John McCain to wish them well, reflects on their policies (and on how she could do a better job than them) and awaits the results. She also sings her campaign song, Tick My Box, and her famous power ballad, I Am America.
Policies? Tina C has lots of 'em! She's an independent – no more Republicrats and Democrins. And she's right wing, right here and just plain right! Whatever happens, America is stronger and the world is a better place because of her candidacy.
Tina C is the creation of Olivier Award-winning comedian Christopher Green. His shows for BBC Radio 4 have included Tina C's Tiny Island Tour, Tina C's State Of The Union Tour and Tina C Goes Down Under – The Aborogynal Monologues.
