Bruce Forsyth shares his memories of master showman Sammy Davis Jr.
Bruce Forsyth shares his
memories of master showman
Sammy Davis Jr.

Marking 50 years since Sammy Davis Jr. joined the Rat Pack, Bruce Forsyth shares personal recollections of his friend in a documentary celebrating one of the most fascinating and complex characters in the history of entertainment.

Although dubbed by many as the greatest showman of all time, Sammy's life was dominated by political controversy, racial prejudice, personal tragedy and, of course, an enormous and unparalleled talent.

Bruce cites his work with Sammy as the most important and enjoyable of his career, in particular the 1980 television special where the two entertainment giants shared a stage.

Bruce's warmth for Sammy shines through the entire programme, and his stories offer a rare insight into the life of an international superstar from humble beginnings to enduring fame.

The contributors include Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, Lionel Blair and Laurie Holloway with amazing archive material from Sammy's live performances and interviews.

BBC RADIO 4 Tuesday 28 October 2008
Fowles in Dorset
Tuesday 28 October
11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

Acclaimed novelist John Fowles
Acclaimed novelist John Fowles

Following the death of novelist John Fowles in 2005, a box of audio tapes was found in his house containing recordings of interviews he carried out in 1978 with the oldest residents of Lyme Regis. This programme presents highlights of these recordings of Fowles at work as curator of Lyme Regis museum. These recordings have never been broadcast before.

The interviews are a record of Dorset life in the first years of the 20th century and during the First World War, and Fowles uncovers some fascinating portraits. Fishermen recall the sinking of HMS Formidable off Lyme in 1915, the rescuing of its crew, and the story of the dog, Lassie, who revived a man, left for dead on the floor of the Pilot Boat Inn, by licking his face. Other interviewees recall Lyme's social and working life and a former barmaid remembers serving lunch to a family of Quakers and imitates their speech.

Fowles was curator of Lyme Regis Museum from 1978 to 1988. His public reputation, as he put it, was that of the "cantankerous man of letters", but he gave his time wholeheartedly to his museum duties. This programme reveals what he was like to work with, and how his reputation among those who knew him compared to the public persona. As former museum colleagues explain, he was a brilliant but disorganised curator. This is a chance to hear Fowles on the other side of the microphone, exploring historical themes with a languid but keen curiosity.
