The
Free Thinking Lecture – Will Self
Friday 31 October 9.15-10.00pm BBC RADIO 3
Celebrated author and columnist Will Self gives the opening lecture at Free Thinking 08, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Merseyside's festival of ideas in Liverpool, recorded in front of a live audience at Liverpool's Bluecoat arts centre.
Self argues that the way the mind is portrayed in novels is preposterous, and he questions why people are so resistant to attempts to represent the mind as it is really experienced – in all its terror, exhilaration and confusion. He postulates that many of literature's finest novels are designed to reassure people that they are "normal".
Free Thinking continues on Radio 3 until December, with speakers including Mark Haddon, Tony Benn, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Bill Drummond and Revd Ian Paisley.

Named after a Celtic goddess, all-girl folk band The Shee make their BBC debut in this World On 3 session with Mary Ann Kennedy. The six-piece band met when they were students on Newcastle University's renowned Folk and Traditional Music course, and this month sees the release of their first album, A Different Season, on their own label.
Their line-up is flute, fiddle, electric harp, mandolin and accordion, and they describe their mix as "Scottish folk, Gaelic song, bluegrass and frisky instrumentals". They play a blend of traditional tunes and original songs, and Mary Ann will no doubt insist that this 31 October session should include their tune Happy Halloween.

Policing Teens The PC Way
Friday 31 October 11.00-11.30am BBC RADIO 4
How do you keep teenage gangs off the streets? Dominic Arkwright reports on both the heavy-handed and the politically correct methods employed.
"I think we've got too soft with everything – you're not allowed to do this, you're not allowed to do that. I say bring back the birch," says Essex resident David Geffaell.
From the "in your face" policing of Operation Leopard in Basildon to the summer-long curfew of Operation Goodnight on a Cornish estate, the search is on for new ways to keep allegedly feral packs of teenagers at bay.
Dominic witnesses pioneering schemes in action, meets the man who invented the Mosquito (the high-pitched squeak deterrent that only teenagers can hear), and joins a tea dance in North Wiltshire where young hooligans are made to dance with their elders in an attempt to build mutual respect.
