Performance On 3 – London Symphony Orchestra
Tuesday 7 October
7.00-9.15pm BBC RADIO 3

Conductor Valery Gergiev and The London Symphony Orchestra launch their Emigrés series on composers in exile, starting with a focus on Rachmaninov. At the height of his fame, Rachmaninov liked to escape for peace and quiet, but when the disruptions of the 1917 Revolution caused him to leave Russia for good, he felt the loss of his homeland keenly.

This first concert in the LSO's Barbican season opens with the First symphony, composed in St Petersburg when Rachmaninov was just 22. It was initially poorly received due to a terrible first performance, which affected him greatly. The other work in the programme is the Third Symphony, written during a summer break in Lucerne some years after his emigration to America, and it is filled with the sorrow of separation from his home country.

The London Symphony Orchestra performance is followed by Play To The Nation, BBC Radio 3's celebration of amateur orchestras across the UK, which shows the talent of the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Edward Gregson's Metamorphoses.

Presenter and Producer/Edward Blakeman

Remembering Alan
Tuesday 7 October
11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

Writer and satirist Alan Coren, who died last October, is remembered as a school friend; an Oxford graduate; a Harkness Fellow visiting US Universities; editor of Punch; a national columnist; a broadcaster; a family man; and possibly Britain's leading comic writer, in this programme for BBC Radio 4.

Christopher Matthew, close friend and fellow traveller on Radio 4's Freedom Pass, talks to a selection of Alan's friends and professional colleagues who, together, reveal a comic genius whose wit and turn of phrase was always razor sharp but never gratuitously vicious.

The programme features contributions from: Jeffrey Cloves (journalist and school friend); Jon Rayman (lawyer and fellow Oxford graduate); Bob Folkenflik (Professor of English at the University of California at Irvine); Michael Bywater and Susan Jeffreys (one-time Punch staffers); Libby Purves and Sandi Toksvig (fellow writers and broadcasters); Eve Pollard (former Editor); and Linda Agran (cousin and TV producer).

The Party Line Ep 1/6
Tuesday 7 October
6.30-7.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis return with a new series of their topical sitcom, The Party Line, recorded in front of a live studio audience.

The series revolves around Duncan Stonebridge, a hapless MP with a shrinking majority who dreams of a quiet weekend in his constituency of Rothershurst. His career is stuck in second gear and, although he is a good constituency MP, he's out of his depth with real Westminster players and his prospects have never been quite the same since he accidentally fell off the stage during Question Time.

Since the last series, Duncan has married his PA, Sue, and is having to contend with a thrusting new Tory on the block who is now the leader of the council – and a female to boot. How will Duncan fare?

Duncan Stonebridge is played once again by James Fleet, who is joined by the other original cast members: Simon Greenall, Geoff McGivern and Geraldine McNulty.

Producer/Dawn Ellis
