The Story Of Carmine Appice
Saturday 20 September 7.00-8.00pm BBC RADIO 2
|
|
|
|
|
Pete Mitchell tells the story of songwriter and Vanilla Fudge's legendary rock drummer, Carmine Appice.
Appice bridged the gap between psychedelia and progressive rock and, by the age of 19, enjoyed hits around the world and toured with Hendrix, the Doors, the Monkees, Mamas And Papas and the Byrds.
Appice was John Bonham's idol and influenced countless bands, including Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult.
Appice wrote Da Ya Think I'm Sexy and Young Turks for Rod Stewart – two of the star's most successful recordings – and spent seven years in Stewart's band. He has also worked with Cactus, Jeff Beck, Ozzy Osbourne and Pink Floyd. He is also the author of the successful rock-drumming book Realistic Rock.
Pete Mitchell travels to America to track down the larger-than-life rock star. Along the way, he talks to members of Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Dio, Cactus and Vanilla Fudge.

Bob Harris presents live from Nashville
During the week of the Americana Music Awards, tonight's programme comes live from Nashville.
Bob is joined in his Music Row studio by guests who are in town for this annual celebration of Americana music – including singer-songwriter and award-winning New York radio DJ Laura Cantrell.
Famed in the UK as a favourite artist of the late John Peel, Laura has received huge critical acclaim for her albums Not The Tremblin' Kind, When The Roses Bloom Again and Humming By The Flowered Vine.
Following a three-year break from recording, in which she concentrated on raising her new baby daughter, Laura has returned with an EP comprising covers of songs including Merle Haggard's Silver Wings, Roger Miller's Train Of Life, New Order's Love Vigilantes and the Bacharach and David track, Trains And Boats And Planes.
Also live in the studio with Bob is four-piece alternative country Texan band The Gougers, who play tracks from their latest album.
In and among these live studio sessions, Bob selects some of the best new music in Nashville's record shops, and features artists performing in town at the Americana music showcases.
Highlights of the Awards can be heard in Bob's show at 7pm on Thursday.

Jazz
Library – Harry James
Saturday 20 September 4.00-5.00pm BBC RADIO 3
|
|
|
|
|
As Jazz Library moves to Saturday afternoons, the series relaunches with a portrait of trumpeter Harry James. James was one of the most naturally gifted brass players in jazz, with a remarkable range, a perfect tone and an excellent sense of jazz timing. Blessed with film-star good looks, Harry even married into the Hollywood lifestyle when he wedded Hollywood pin-up Betty Grable.
Despite becoming a minor movie star himself, music was James's first love. Whenever he got the chance, he surrounded himself with the finest jazz musicians of the age – from Teddy Wilson and members of the Basie Band to his own groups and those of Benny Goodman, with whom he first came to fame.
Guy Barker found early inspiration in James's music and gives Alyn Shipton the inside track on how demanding it would have been for any trumpeter, even one with James's genius.

Opera On 3 – The Rise And Fall Of The City Of Mahagonny

Viennese maestro HK Gruber conducts an all-star cast
"Oh show me the way to the next whiskey bar," may be an appropriate invitation to the capacity audience at the opening concert of this year's Edinburgh International Festival. However, Brecht and Weill's anti-capitalist masterpiece, The Rise And Fall Of The City Of Mahagonny, is stuffed with other memorable musical numbers.
Set in the imaginary city of Mahagonny, where money counts for everything and the inhabitants wallow in sex, gambling and drinking, the opera tells of Jenny the prostitute (Giselle Allen), her love affair with Jimmy the lumberjack (Dean Griffey) and their destiny when a failed wager leads them to court.
The score is a mixture of Weill's symphonic writing with rag-time, blues, foxtrot and the other popular styles often associated with Brecht and Weill's collaborations.
Viennese maestro and cabaret star HK Gruber conducts an all-star cast with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Edinburgh Festival Chorus in a concert performance narrated by Hannah Gordon.
It is introduced by Donald McLeod, who also talks to the conductor about the context of the piece and Weill and Brecht's influence on subsequent operatic developments.

Sir Derek Jacobi stars in a play written especially for him by Lynne Truss
Sir Derek Jacobi and acclaimed author Lynne Truss were on a panel at a book festival talking about audio books when Lynne first conceived the idea of writing a play for Sir Derek. Bora Bora is that play.
Sir Derek plays Alec, the art-historian brother of the famous actor, Tony Bosanquet. Alec has lived his life in the shadows following a traumatic event in his childhood when a movie he appeared in was notoriously suppressed. Through a ruse, a biographer, Charlie, joins a painting holiday led by Alec and attempts to shatter Alec's silence about his brother.
The painting holiday is a tradition and an opportunity for Alec to share his skills with watercolours. The calm of the group, mostly made up of older women, is disturbed by Charlie's arrival. Margaret, a retired ACAS negotiator, becomes Alec's fierce defender as Alec is forced to face a terrible truth about his life, and about the nature of forgiveness.
Adrian Bower stars as Charlie and Cheryl Campbell plays Margaret.
