Network Radio Week 38

Tuesday 16 September 2008

BBC RADIO 3 Tuesday 16 September 2008
Composer Of The Week –
Lord Berners: Berners and Diaghilev
Ep 2/5
Monday 15 to Friday 19 September
12.00-1.00pm BBC RADIO 3

Donald Macleod continues this week's exploration of the colourful life and music of one of England's most eccentric composers: Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, the 14th Lord Berners, painter and novelist, a writer of poetry and nonsense verse, and a composer of brilliant and whimsical music.

In spite of his ultra-establishment position as a peer of the realm, Lord Berners didn't connect at all with the old guard in the artistic world. He found he had more in common with the wildly eccentric Sitwells who, like him, were rebelling against a conventional Victorian upbringing.

Berners's idiosyncratic ways didn't deter some of the greatest artistic talents of the time from wanting to work with him and, in Tuesday's programme, Donald Macleod introduces two works commissioned by the renowned impresario Serge Diaghilev – Berners's first and only opera Le Carosse du Saint-Sacrement and the suite from his fairytale ballet The Triumph Of Neptune.

Performance On 3 –
Edinburgh International Festival:
Handel Israel In Egypt

Tuesday 16 September
7.00-9.15pm BBC RADIO 3

Continuing BBC Radio 3's coverage of the Edinburgh International Festival in its newly extended flagship evening concert slot, Performance On 3 presents an acclaimed performance of one of Handel's masterpieces, Israel In Egypt.

Having triumphed with their 2003 performance of Handel's Poro, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is reunited with Baroque star Emmanuelle Haïm. With rousing choruses, descriptive music and sublime arias and duets, the composer brings his opera-sharpened dramatic sense to this biblical oratorio in a world of fire and brimstone, plagues and war as Moses leads the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.

BBC RADIO 4 Tuesday 16 September 2008
Pulling Out The Stops – The Vienna Court Organist
Tuesday 16 September
1.30-2.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Award-winning violinist Daniel Hope takes an exclusive tour of the city of Vienna, through its back streets, hidden secrets, and lost music, in the company of the Royal Court Organist Martin Haselbock.

The history of the Vienna Royal Court Organist can be traced back more than 500 years. From Bach to Bruckner, some of the most famous names in the history of classical music have either been associated with the title, or influenced and taught by those who have held it.

The latest in a long line of virtuoso musicians, Martin shows Daniel some of the important sites that help tell the city's illustrious tale.

Martin is also a champion of lost and forgotten musical works, so Daniel visits the Vienna archives to dig into a musical detective story that features an exclusive recording of the long-lost Bach piece Choralfantasie BWV 1128, which was recently rediscovered and premiered by Haselbock.

File On 4
Tuesday 16 September
8.00-8.40pm BBC RADIO 4

While Britain's hospitals struggle to contain the spread of MRSA, the first of a new series of File On 4 reports on a new and potentially deadly strain of the bacteria, PVLA-MRSA, which attacks young people.

PVLA-MRSA causes boils and skin infections and can lead to blood-poisoning and pneumonia. It can be contracted through contact sports and damage to the skin and, without rapid treatment, is likely to be fatal.

Doctors in Plymouth are puzzled by a cluster of cases including a 10-year-old girl who died last year after suffering flu-like symptoms, a woman who fell ill after going to the gym, and a pregnant woman who was in a coma for three weeks before recovering. They fear that Britain could be following the path of the US where MRSA is widespread.

As Jenny Cuffe reports, another concern for scientists is the possible link to MRSA in pets and farm animals. A Scottish Laboratory has identified three cases of MRSA in humans directly linked to animal infection. In some European countries where MRSA is common in animals, tests on farmers and their families show they carry the bacteria.
