Miranda Hart's Jokeshop Ep 3/4
Saturday 6 September 1.30-2.00pm BBC RADIO 2
|
|
|
|
|
Much to her family's dismay, self effacing, life-embracing clown Miranda Hart has used her inheritance to buy a joke shop. Lacking the organisational skills needed for retail – or anything else – Miranda has gone into partnership with Stevie, one of Britain's greatest humour vacuums.
Stevie mans the till for hours at a time while Miranda "pops out" on regular, self-imposed challenges. Miranda is determined to suss out what it takes to be a girly girl, to deal with her outrageously embarrassing mother in public places, to not look a complete idiot every time she meets the gorgeous Gary and to persuade other people to take life less seriously.
In the third episode, What A Wife, Gary needs a pretend wife for the evening and for some reason chooses Stevie instead of Miranda.
This affectionate sitcom, written by and starring Miranda Hart, also features Patricia Hodge as Miranda's mother, Sarah Hadland as Stevie, and Tom Ellis as Gary.

Though still only in her twenties, Kaushiki Chakrabarty has become one of the most revered singers in Indian classical music. Jameela Siddiqi introduces her performance of a single piece, Raag Abhogi, recorded for World Routes earlier this year at the Darbar Festival in Leicester.
Trained by her father, singer Ajoy Chakrabarty, Kaushiki was acclaimed in her debut year by revered Indian maestro Pandit Jasraj. She first attracted attention outside India in 2005 when she won a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music.
Kaushiki is accompanied by Ajay Joglekar on harmonium and Sanju Sahai on tabla. Jameela then talks to Kaushiki about the festival, her voice and the Raag she sings in the programme.

The BBC Proms offers a nod in the direction of the Auld Alliance tonight as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and its French Music Director Stéphan Denève return to the Royal Albert Hall.
The concert opens with Roussel's colourful and irrepressibly joyous second suite from the ballet Bacchus et Ariane, while Debussy's symphonic sketches of the sea, La Mer, closes it. In between comes Thea Musgrave's Rainbow, a vivid picture of a storm first performed 18 years ago by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Tonight's performance acknowledges her 80th birthday. There's also Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, featuring award-winning pianist Stephen Hough.

Brel Et Moi –
Alastair Campbell On Jacques Brel Saturday
6 September
10.30-11.00am BBC RADIO 4 |
|
Former Downing Street Director Of Communications Alastair Campbell reveals one of his own little-known, but lifelong, passions.
From his public image, few would have any hint that Alastair is a devotee of Belgian singer Jacques Brel. But on the 30th anniversary of Brel's death, Alastair journeys to Paris to delve into the secrets of the singer's life and music.
Born in 1929 in Brussels, Brel was at his height during the Fifties and Sixties. Through songs like Ne Me Quitte Pas, he explored much deeper, darker emotions than most pop music and his live performances were famed for their intensity and ferocity. Revered in France, he remains less well known in Britain.
In this programme, Alastair meets comedian Mel Smith, a fellow Brel fanatic; Jean Michel Boris, who helped give Brel his first break at the famous Olympia music hall; Jean Corti, accordionist and co-writer of Brel's songs; journalist and biographer Olivier Todd; and Brel's daughter, France.

Archive Hour – Then Was The Winter Of Our Discontent
Saturday 6 September 8.00-9.00pm BBC RADIO 4
|
|
|
|
|
The winter of 1978/9, "the winter of discontent", was a period of bitter and intense industrial and political dispute, which has influenced British politics ever since.
A huge wave of strikes across the country led to corpses being unburied, a huge pile of stinking rubbish in Leicester Square, which became a bizarre kind of tourist attraction and, a few months later, the election of Margaret Thatcher.
The mere phrase "the winter of discontent" still brings back memories of union conflict. The incoming radical Tory government cracked down on union power and Labour leaders ever since have sought a different and more distant relationship with the unions.
Thirty years after this dramatic phase of British history, Anne Perkins talks to some of those involved and recalls the events of the period to recreate the atmosphere of the time and consider its lasting impact on British politics.
Interviewees include Roy Hattersley, Tony Benn, Bernard Donoughue, Jack Jones, Brendan Barber, Rodney Bickerstaffe, Shirley Williams, Jim Prior and Chris Patten
