Howard Goodall showcases the rich talent in the UK's specialist musical schools and colleges for BBC Radio 2
Howard Goodall returns to BBC Radio 2 with a series showcasing the scale and quality of young musical talent in a variety of specialist schools and arts colleges across the UK.
Over the next six weeks, the series features music performed by gifted young musicians and goes behind the doors of these schools – which range from mini conservatoires to comprehensives.
From folk orchestras, jazz ensembles, pop bands and singer-songwriters to symphony orchestras, string ensembles and chamber trios, with a dose of choral singing and musical theatre, too, Howard selects music especially recorded for the series at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA); The Brit School; The Purcell School; St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh; The Sage Gateshead weekend school; Guildford County School; Smithills School, Bolton; and Ysgol Glanaethwy in North Wales.
"This series has been a joy to make and I suspect, for many, it will be a revelation, too," says Howard. "The quality and variety of superb musicianship we encounter on our visits to schools of musical excellence is proof – if you ever needed it – that the young people currently in school or college are the most musical generation ever."
In today's opener, Howard discovers some fine traditional music from Folkestra, funk/swing fusion from Rocket Science and a classical chamber trio, all from the gifted and talented weekend school hosted by the Sage, Gateshead.

The regular Proms performance of Beethoven's Choral Symphony falls to the BBC Philharmonic and its Principal Conductor Gianandrea Noseda this evening, whose Beethoven cycle in 2005 won glowing plaudits.
The concert opens with the spiritually shimmering Prelude to Act 1 of Wagner's opera Parsifal, which leads to Penderecki's moving Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima, before Beethoven's rarely heard Elegiac Song – written in 1814 for a friend whose wife had died in childbirth.
And so, in tonight's Prom, it is from the emotional fallout of spiritual searching, then of man's inhumanity to man and, finally, of a poignant, personal farewell that Beethoven's life-affirming Ninth Symphony rises, with the universal human message of its Ode To Joy.
The soloists are soprano Emma Bell, mezzo Jane Irwin, tenor Timothy Robinson and base Iain Paterson, who join the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and the BBC Philharmonic.

Bojan Z, Seb Rochford And Ruth Goller: Recorded Live At The
Vortex Friday 12 September
11.30pm-1.00am BBC RADIO 3 |
Jez Nelson presents a gig recorded in July at London's Vortex jazz club, featuring acclaimed Serbian pianist Bojan Z, with Ruth Goller on bass and Seb Rochford on drums. Operating both acoustic and electric pianos, Bojan Z's futuristic sound complements Rochford's rhythmic drum beats. By juxtaposing improvisational flair with a rock sensibility, the trio create an intense sound with complex time signatures and percussive motifs laid over solid hooks and funky bass lines.
Rochford is the drummer for Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland and The Basquiat Strings and Bojan Z was named European Jazz Artist of the Year in 2005. This gig was the second of two sell-out nights at the Vortex.

Bridgend County, in Wales, has suffered the suicides of 22 young people in the last 20 months. The scale of this tragedy attracted the attention of the international press, causing experts to worry that the news pieces themselves could cause more suicides. Glaring headlines alienated the communities within Bridgend, where many knew some of the young people. One 16-year-old says he no longer talks about the suicides because he doesn't know who might be affected and what they might be feeling.
In the first part of this two-part documentary, Penny Marshall examines whether there are any underlying reasons that could help explain why so many individual, unique and tragic deaths happened so close together in Bridgend County.
Penny asks experts about the roles of the internet and alcohol consumption and talks to the coroner who first drew official attention to the number of suicides in this part of South Wales.
And, in the week of World Suicide Prevention Day, Penny hears from some of the dozens of local volunteers and health care professionals who've rallied in the aftermath of the suicides to try to stop anything like it ever happening again. The programme asks whether any lessons can be learned from other places that have seen a number of suicides.

The Maldives, Sri Lanka, Seychelles and Mauritius are popular tourist destinations. Here, Robin White tells the stories behind the tourist facades.
For the past 30 years, The Maldives' 1,200 idyllic, up-market holiday islands have been run, somewhat dictatorially, by one man: President Maumoom Gayoom.
But now, President Gayoum has agreed to introduce democracy with guarantees of free elections and an independent judiciary. Robin looks at why he has changed his mind and assesses his chances of winning the presidential elections scheduled for October.
