BBC RADIO 2 Friday 15 August 2008
Vanity Fair – The Novel That Changed My Life Ep 4/6
Friday 15 August
7.00-7.30pm BBC RADIO 2

Kathy Lette delves into the novel that changed her life, William Makepeace Thackeray's epic, Vanity Fair, and relishes in the guile and wit of anti-heroine Becky Sharpe.

This satirical picture of high society at the dawn of the 19th century is set against the backdrop of the Battle of Waterloo. It's a comic masterpiece and, like many of Kathy's own books, is packed with tales of husband-jumping and social-climbing that still resonate today.

Next week, Mel Smith watches the fortunes of property tycoon Charlie Croker take a nosedive in Tom Wolfe's A Man In Full.

Presenter/Kathy Lette, Producers/Kate Bland and Susan Marling

The music of Janáček is a relatively recent departure for Pierre Boulez, who conducted From The House Of The Dead at the prestigious Aix-en-Provence Festival last year to enormous acclaim. Here, he takes on two of the Czech composer's greatest non-theatrical works, Sinfonietta – with its extraordinary, brassy sonorities – and the mighty Glagolitic Mass, performed here in Janáček's own more fiery and dramatic original version, as well as the rarely encountered Concertino for piano and orchestra.

Boulez conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, joined for the Glagolitic Mass by the London Symphony Chorus and organist Simon Preston. The soloists include Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano), Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet (soprano), Anna Stéphany (mezzo soprano), Simon O'Neill (tenor) and Peter Fried (bass).

This edition of Jazz Library features Alyn's archive interviews with McGriff and several of his finest tracks, including All About My Girl, I've Got A Woman and The Worm.

BBC RADIO 4 Friday 15 August 2008
Afternoon Play – Whispering
Friday 15 August
2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4

This week's Afternoon Play is a psychological thriller about adultery and murder, by bestselling author Campbell Armstrong.

Whispering tells the story of two lovers, Lucy and Ted. Lucy is single and Ted isn't. The obstacle to the fulfilment of their love is Ted's wife, Cassie, with whom he still lives but no longer loves. But there's another complication – Cassie is sick with a terminal illness.

Ted and Lucy are enraptured by each other and forced by circumstance into secret trysts and furtive meetings. But the intensifying depth of their feelings makes this arrangement impossible long term – they want to be free to be together.

Cassie, even in her sickness, is acidic and contemptuous of Ted and his work, but Ted can't leave her. The only solution is that the lovers will have to be patient and wait for Cassie's death. But, as time goes on, Ted begins to wonder if the end should be hastened.

John McAndrew stars as Ted and Amy Clifton as Lucy.

Producer/Kate McAll

Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive Ep 1/6
Friday 15 August
6.30-7.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Armando Iannucci returns for a fourth series of his topical chat show about the week, in which guests from the worlds of comedy and culture are set challenges, lured into debate and interrupted by arbitrary and stupid things.

Recorded in front of a live audience, the show has the "sketchability" of The Now Show, combined with the going-off-on-a-mad-streak of a maverick News Quiz round. Armando and his comedian guests pull apart the week's news in an effortlessly original manner.

Guests over the last three series have included Clive Anderson, Jo Brand, Dara O'Briain, Mark Watson, Marcus Brigstocke, David Mitchell, Alexei Sayle, Stewart Lee, Chris Addison, Will Smith, Mark Steel and Phill Jupitus. Guests for this series are yet to be confirmed.

This Is A True Story
Friday 15 August
9.00-10.00pm BBC RADIO 4

This Is A True Story, performed by Tom Wright as a monologue, tells the story of Howard Neal. Convicted on the strength of an alleged confession that was neither recorded nor witnessed, Neal was sentenced to death by a Mississippi court for the murder of his niece and his half-brother.

Howard Neal has learning difficulties. His age has now caught up with his IQ – both are 54 – and he has been on death row for 25 years. Neal taught himself to read and write while on death row and This Is A True Story is based on his 33 hand-written pages about his life, which Australian barrister Nicholas Harrington came across while working as a voluntary paralegal with Clive Stafford-Smith, whose charitable organisation, Reprieve, fights for the rights of prisoners facing the death penalty.

It provides powerful and compelling comment on the plight of those with mental disabilities on death row.

This Is A True Story was adapted for radio by Pia Di Mattina from a stage adaptation by Nicholas Harrington and Tom Wright. The original music is by Monique Di Mattina.

BBC WORLD SERVICE Friday 15 August 2008
The Right To Know Ep 2/2
Friday 15 August
10.05-10.30am BBC WORLD SERVICE

Freedom of information (FOI) is increasingly seen as a prerequisite for a modern democracy. Laura Trevelyan examines what this means in a wide range of different countries, from India to Mexico and from China to Sweden, as well as the US and the UK.

If knowledge is power, then the right to know is a crucial part of the balance between citizen and state. More and more countries are introducing freedom of information laws, giving citizens the right to government information. Over 70 states already have an FOI law of some kind, and another 50 or so have begun moves to get FOI legislation passed.

Laura explores the achievements of FOI legislation and whether such laws are sometimes more symbolic than practical in their impact. She looks at how far FOI laws go in helping to tackle corruption and scandals in government and asks why several governments are now dragging their feet, resisting the FOI rights that they have granted their own citizens.

Heart And Soul – Missionaries Ep 1/2
Friday 15 August
3.30-4.00pm BBC WORLD SERVICE

Peter Stanford investigates what it means to be a missionary in today's world. Contrasting the present with the past, he explores the variety of different meanings the missionary experience has for different people: the impact of missionaries on the communities they live in and how being a missionary affects people's lives and faith.

Christian missionary organisations have existed for nearly 500 years, initially sending representatives from Europe to South America, and later Africa, to spread the word and convert souls to Christianity.

Peter tells the stories of a number of modern missionaries, including: the Irish Catholic missionary priest who has spent decades in the favelas of São Paolo; a young British couple going on a short-term mission to Uganda for a month; and the Kenyan priest whose sense of mission has brought him and his family to a deprived inner-city area of the UK.
