Composer Of The Week – Rimsky-Korsakov Ep 3/5
Monday 7 to Friday 11 July
12.00-1.00pm BBC RADIO 3

Donald Macleod discovers a Rimsky-Korsakov who is well on the road to the power and influence that eventually made him Russia's most significant musician, as he continues his profile on the composer. Rimsky-Korsakov was teaching at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, assistant at the Royal Chapel and leading advisor to Balyayev's new publishing company. However, he was also periodically beset by doubts about his ability and inspiration and by depressions that he dealt with in the only way he knew how – through his work.

Performance On 3 – Gergiev's Mahler
Wednesday 9 July
7.00-8.45pm BBC RADIO 3

Gergiev's Mahler series with the London Symphony Orchestra continues with Symphony No. 7, which was completed in 1906. It is perhaps his most enigmatic symphony, full of garish extremes, even by his standards – from the visionary tenor horn solo which opens the epic first movement, through a shadowy scherzo and a romantically tender serenade (with delicate mandolin and guitar), to the wildly disjointed contrasts of the finale.

It is performed here alongside Schoenberg's one-movement Chamber Symphony for 15 solo instruments – the culmination of the composer's early years, when his music was harmonically adventurous, but tonal and rich with bright Romantic expression. It dates from the year after the Mahler symphony.

The Essay – Greek And Latin Voices Ep 3/4
Monday 7 to Thursday 10 July
11.00-11.15pm BBC RADIO 3

The Essay – Greek And Latin Voices series on the great Athenian philosopher Plato continues with Professor Chris Emlyn-Jones, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Classical Studies at the Open University, who explores Plato's idea of philosophy as a drama in which characters reveal emotion, as well as intellectual conflict.

Chris examines why Plato wrote dramatic dialogues in which fully rounded and complex characters react to Socrates's questioning and refutation. He reveals how Plato draws out the emotional, as well as the intellectual, as a way to reflect his idea of philosopy as a communal search for answers that are always open to challenge, revision and correction.
