With a style that fuses country, R&B, blues, folk and rock 'n' roll, she has garnered a loyal following in Europe and is so beloved in her home town that San Diego City Council named 31 May 2008 as Eve Selis Day.

BBC RADIO 3 Thursday 10 July 2008
Performance On 3 – Gergiev's Mahler
Thursday 10 July
7.00-9.45pm BBC RADIO 3

Under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the London Symphony Orchestra gives a live performance of Mahler's Symphony
No. 8 from St Paul's Cathedral as part of a week of Gergiev's Mahler on Radio 3.

The Eighth, dubbed the "symphony of a thousand" for its mammoth cast of soloists, chorus and orchestra, was the last symphony to be premièred during Mahler's lifetime, and his greatest public triumph as a composer. Its two massive sections – a burstingly joyful setting of the Latin hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus, followed by a vivid treatment of the final scenes of Goethe's Faust – may seem hard to reconcile, but are united by the sheer affirmative strength and radiance of Mahler's music.

Presenter/Petroc Trelawny, Producer/Kevin Bee

The Essay – Greek And Latin Voices Ep 4/4
Monday 7 to Thursday 10 July
11.00-11.15pm BBC RADIO 3

British philosopher Mary Warnock presents the final essay of the week on the work of the great Athenian philosopher Plato with an exploration of the way Plato saw the world, and how he understood the soul.

Mary examines how Plato's conception of the world was very different from our own, and how his view shaped his ideas. She writes: "My great love of Plato and Aristotle has been partly because their translation into English had to be a kind of conceptual and essentially historical exercise, an attempt to see the world through their very different eyes."

Presenter/Mary Warnock, Producer/Elizabeth Allard

BBC RADIO 4 Thursday 10 July 2008
Deep In The Heart Of Texas
Thursday 10 July
11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

Texas is the home of rednecks, cowboys and George W Bush. But it has a liberal, bohemian and strange heart – Austin, the state capital – explored by Peter Curran in this one-off documentary.

Austin, Texas, is one of the most progressive cities in the country, the home of the University of Texas, the South By South West (SXSW) Festival and the largest per capita gay and lesbian population in the state. It is an oasis of liberalism, anarchism, nihilism and many other isms in a state that has a reputation for being an inhospitable desert for anyone to the philosophical left of Bush Jnr. The state capital's slogan is "Keep Austin Weird".

But changes are afoot – big hi-tech companies have located there, a new conservatism is creeping in and the locals are being priced out.

Peter investigates whether the heart of Texas can survive the new influx. He talks to locals including the former front man of the Armadillo World Headquarters and poster artist, Jim Franklin; the founder of the SXSW Festival, Louis Black; dissident columnist John Kelso; and Cornell Hurd from the Cornell Band – one of the best country bands in the world, according to Austin wannabe governor, author and musician Kinky Friedman, who also gives his own offbeat take on Austin and its future.

BBC WORLD SERVICE Thursday 10 July 2008
Assignment – A Model For Peace?
Thursday 10 July
10.05-10.30am BBC WORLD SERVICE

The Good Friday Agreement and subsequent reconciliation process in Northern Ireland is seen by many politicians as a blueprint for healing the wounds of conflict.

It set out a plan for devolved government in Northern Ireland on a stable and inclusive basis and provided for the creation of Human Rights and Equality commissions, the early release of terrorist prisoners, the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons and far-reaching reforms of criminal justice and policing.

But while The Troubles in Northern Ireland are over, Unionist and Catholic communities still remain apart, and there's been no formal truth and reconciliation process. The BBC's former Northern Ireland correspondent, Andrew Whitehead, returns to Northern Ireland to test the Good Friday Agreement model for peace.
