Victoria – A Quiet Life In Spain Ep 4/5
Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July 12.00-1.00pm BBC RADIO 3

|
In his dedication to King Philip II of Spain in 1583, Tomas Luis de Victoria wrote of his exhaustion from musical toil in Rome, and of his desire to return to Spain "to spend my time in contemplation of the divine, as befits a priest". Victoria's fame had spread widely, and he could have had his pick of Spanish cathedrals at which to work. Donald Macleod and Jeremy Summerly contemplate Victoria's choice to live at the Convent de Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid as personal chaplain to the King's sister, the Dowager Empress Maria. They also consider Victoria's contribution to advances in music printing in the 16th century.

Philosopher Jonathan Wolff presents the concluding essay of Doctoring Philosophy, marking the 60th anniversary of the NHS by exploring and questioning the philosophical beliefs which led to its foundation.
When an American survey concluded that it is better to cap 150 rotten teeth than perform one emergency appendectomy, it started a fierce debate among philosophers and doctors about "priority setting".
Few health professionals would argue that the "greatest happiness of the greatest number" should be their guiding principle but Jonathan asks how an over-stretched health service should prioritise when all needs cannot be met.

Stephen Fry makes a cameo appearance
Stephen Fry makes a cameo appearance as himself in Jon Canter's play.
Jackie is married to Terry, a good-natured but big-bottomed butcher. She works in a newsagent and is restless. Her youngest child, Chloe, is about to marry Carl, a sensible lad. But Jackie thinks Chloe is repeating her own mistake: marrying too young, without exploring her options.
Jackie is a big fan of Stephen Fry and would love her daughter to marry a man as interesting as him. Jackie buys a tent, ostensibly as a wedding present for Chloe. Instead Jackie sleeps in the tent herself, in the garden, to escape her husband. She has a series of dreams about Stephen Fry, who is everything Terry is not: eloquent, metropolitan, learned and gay. In a series of exciting fantasies, Jackie and Stephen have a platonic love affair.
When Chloe meets Stephen Fry in an Indian restaurant and tells him her mum is in love with him, fantasy starts to become reality.
Terry discovers his wife is in love with a man known only as "Steve". He has no idea who Steve is and doesn't know whether to confront him or keep quiet and wait for his wife's affair to blow over. Eventually, husband, wife and Steve meet in an Ipswich bookshop where their lives are changed for ever.
