Mike Harding chats to Scottish singer, songwriter and musician Emily Smith in this week's programme.
Emily is the latest artist to emerge from a hotbed of Scottish female singing talent in recent years, including KT Tunstall, Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart, and is set to be the next to take folk music across into the mainstream.
Emily, who hails from rural Dumfriesshire, has a keen passion for local history and a strong sense of belonging which is reflected in both her own songs and the traditional material she chooses to perform.
Still only in her twenties, she is an accomplished accordion player, pianist and singer with a number of awards to her name including the 2002 BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year and the Scots Trad Music Award's Scots Singer of the Year in 2005. She was also the first-ever Scottish winner of the USA Songwriting Competition.

Franz Liszt Ep 3/5 Monday 23 to Friday 27 June
12.00-1.00pm BBC RADIO 3
|
|
Donald Macleod looks at Liszt the re-composer in today's exploration of this perennially fascinating musical personality.
Franz Liszt was an inveterate transcriber – both of his own music, and of the music of others. In fact, almost half of the works in his catalogue are more or less radical re-workings of music by other composers. Donald discusses why he spent so much of his time re-arranging existing music rather than writing more of his own.

Afternoon Play – The Confessions

|
|
Set in the art world in Geneva, The Confessions, by Charlotte Greig, is a thriller about the seductive power of money, glamour, crime and the wrong man for the wrong woman.
Catrin is a receptionist at a Cardiff art auctioneers; a provincial girl, pretty but insecure, she has fallen in love with Luke – who's a bad type.
Luke is an up-and-coming dealer who works at the same firm. One afternoon a woman brings in a painting for valuation. Luke examines the painting, which is evidently pornographic, and assures the woman that this is not the kind of painting that any reputable art auctioneer would handle. Telling her it has no significant market value, he offers to take it off her hands for £50 as a special favour. The woman accepts.
Luke thinks that the painting is really worth a fortune – it's a Turner that escaped Ruskin's bonfire – and therefore hatches a plan. He and Catrin will go to Geneva, where Luke knows a private collector. They can sell the drawing to him and make a fortune. But Catrin may have to pay a higher price than she bargained for.
Lynne Seymour plays Catrin and Clive Standen plays Luke. The cast also includes John Castle and Sara McGaughey.
