Midge Ure plays traditional African instruments with the township musicans of Cape Town
Midge Ure plays traditional African instruments with the township musicans of Cape Town

Midge Ure travels to Cape Town, South Africa, to meet a group of young township musicians who are using traditional African instruments to record covers of classic Motown and soul hits.

Abavuki is a group of 10 aspiring young musicians from Langa, Cape Town's oldest, and one of South Africa's toughest, black townships.

Abavuki's latest project sees them fusing their unique brand of "Township Jazz" with Motown and soul hits. The project is produced by London-based Barney Rattle, who has been fusing diverse music styles for many years to bring the sounds of Cape Town's townships to the world.

Barney's latest project with Abavuki sees them recording 16 classic songs including Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Tears Of A Clown, Ain't No Sunshine and Stand By Me, using traditional African instruments together with brass instruments, a capella and gospel vocals.

Midge meets the musicians in Langa township to find out more about who they are, where they come from and how this unique project has come about. He hears them playing their songs live and learns a little about their traditional instruments. He even gets to try out Do They Know It's Christmas? on the marimba.

Midge learns about Abavuki's tough backgrounds – the brother of one of the band members was killed by a gang and many have parents with drug and alcohol problems. In the township, Midge sees parallels with his Glasgow tenement upbringing and the way that music offers an escape from poverty and the promise of a better life.

Man Of The Moment

Easter Saturday 11 April
2.30-4.00pm BBC RADIO 4

As part of BBC Radio 4's tribute to Sir Alan Ayckbourn, who turns 70 this April, the station broadcasts this dark comedy set around, and in, the swimming pool of a Mediterranean villa.

Vic Parks is, apparently, the man of the moment – a vicious criminal who, having spent nine years in jail for a botched bank robbery, has written his autobiography and is now a popular television celebrity.

Spending time in his idyllic Mediterranean villa, he has agreed to appear, poolside, on a television reality show called Their Paths Crossed.

The programme's producer, Jill Rillington, plans to reunite Vic with the bank clerk, Douglas Beechey, whose actions unwittingly foiled Vic's robbery and led to his time in prison.

Jill hopes to exploit the irony that, although Douglas had a brief 15 minutes of fame, the man who has found lasting celebrity is the villain. But the proposed documentary starts to free-fall and events take an extraordinary turn around the swimming pool.

The cast includes Janie Dee as Trudy Parks, Tim Piggott-Smith as Vic Parks, Lisa Dillon as Jill Rillington and Alex Jennings as Douglas Beechey.
