RAJAR 2011 Quarter 2: record figures for Radio 4

  • Record listening figures for Radio 4
  • Radio 4 Extra adds half a million
  • New record for Today programme

Radio 4 is more popular than ever, boosted by record figures for the Today programme and a surge in listening to Radio 4 Extra – the rebranded Radio 7 – according to data published today by RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Ltd).

The figures show that during the measurement period (March 28 to June 26), Radio 4 reached 10.85 million people each week (from 10.40m last year and 10.83 last quarter), the Today programme attracted 7.18 million listeners per week (from 6.98m last year and the previous record of 7.03m last quarter) and Radio 4 Extra added half a million listeners to post a reach of 1.61 million – up from 949,000 last year and 1.16 million last quarter.

Radio 4 Extra launched on April 2 and is now the country's most popular digital-only radio network – more details can be found here: http://bbc.in/qE9htw. The reach for Radio 4 and the Today programme are the biggest since new research methodology was introduced in January 1999.

RAJAR statistics also show radio listening at record levels, with 47.62 million people tuning into their favourite radio stations every week – 91.7% of the country's population aged 15+.

Tim Davie, Director BBC Audio & Music, said: "Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra play a unique role in the country's cultural and news agenda, so I am delighted to see listeners tuning into them in record numbers. Radio goes from strength to strength as a result of the industry's co-ordinated efforts and we are now seeing impressive performances and growth across the sector."
