BBC Four scoop new Danish drama series, Borgen

Following on from the huge success of the BAFTA-winning, The Killing, BBC Four have acquired a new 10-part series from the same production company, DR/Danish Broadcasting Corp (in-house production).

Borgen is a compelling drama series about the fight for political power and its consequences. Sidse Babett Knudsen plays 40-year-old party leader Birgitte Nyborg who successfully secures a surprise election victory only to discover the biggest challenge of her life is yet to come.

Privately, Birgitte leads a happy family life with her husband and two children. She is a woman with a burning commitment, a big heart and too little time. Her challenge to be a successful politician and remain true to her beliefs will involve personal sacrifice with far reaching consequences for all those involved.

Borgen's mix of complex characters include cynical but brilliant media adviser, Kasper Juul, and young television political journalist Katrine Fonsmark, whose screen presence has quickly earned her popularity but whose personal life threatens to destroy everything she has worked so hard for.

Richard Klein, Controller, BBC Four, says: "BBC Four always buys with an eye to excellence. Borgen is dramatic and entertaining, very much in the mould of The Killing, and fits BBC Four's brief to bring the best international television to the audience."

Ingolf Gabold, Head of DR Fiction, says: "I am excited to learn that yet another DR series will be broadcast on the BBC. I hope this will be as well received by the UK audience as The Killing."

Camilla Hammerich, producer of Borgen, says: "I think it is fantastic that the series will be shown on the BBC. I am proud that a series about politics can travel this far and hopefully reach a large audience outside Denmark."

Borgen has already been on the receiving end of both awards and critical acclaim. Sidse Babett Knudsen won a Golden Nymph-Outstanding Actress for her performance at last week's Monte-Carlo Television Festival. Borgen previously won a Prix Italia for Best Series and two Fipa Awards in France for Best Series and Best Soundtrack.

Directors: Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Rumle Hammerich, Annette K. Olesen and Mikkel Nørgaard
Producer: Camilla Hammerich for DR.
