Radio 1's Teen Awards winners announced

Katy Perry with the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards winners

Three inspirational teenagers were honoured last night (Sunday 14 November) at the first ever BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards, which took place at London's Hammersmith Apollo in front of an audience of 4,000 14- to 17-year-olds.

Featuring performances from Katy Perry, JLS and The Wanted, the event celebrated the achievements of outstanding young people in the UK alongside awards for top stars from the music and entertainment world.

The award for Teen Hero was presented by Katy Perry and Radio 1 DJ Greg James to 16-year-old Connor from Sunderland. After an accident left Connor with 90 per cent burns, he was medically induced into a coma and has had almost 100 operations to date. Connor was thought to be losing his battle to live on six occasions but fought to survive all the odds and now fronts a campaign for fire safety.

The Teen Community Hero award went to Alex, 17, from Ashton-Under-Lyne. Alex caught meningitis when he was just seven years old and lost the use of his legs. He's now a wheelchair basketball player with Olympic ambitions, a sport ambassador for his local area, a charity fundraiser and also helps other disabled children.

Jack from Maidenhead, meanwhile, was named Teen Entrepeneur. The 16-year-old spotted a niche market in his local area – rearing rare breeds of chickens in humane, free-range conditions for sale to local families to keep in their gardens and developing a system so that eggs can be harvested to provide future generations.

These awards were presented alongside awards for top stars from the music and entertainment world, with Robert Pattinson scooping two awards and Plan B, Biffy Clyro, The Inbetweeners and Tom Daley also picking up prizes.

Fearne Cotton, who hosted the event with fellow Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw, said: "All of the teens nominated in the Teen Awards have been outstanding but Connor, Jack and Alex really impressed our judges with their incredible stories. It's been a smashing day and, judging from the noise at the Hammersmith Apollo, the audience have had a great time, too!"

In the celebrity awards, which were voted for by Radio 1 listeners, Twighlight actor Robert Pattinson won both Best Actor and Best Dressed, while hit show The Inbetweeners picked up Best TV Show.

Teen Sporting Hero was awarded to the 16-year-old world champion diver Tom Daley. Plan B picked up Best Album, while Biffy Clyro won Best Song.

The awards ceremony also featured incredible performances from a dazzling line-up of some of the biggest musical stars in the teen world, including Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, JLS, The Wanted and Professor Green.

Radio 1's Teen Awards will broadcast on BBC Three on Wednesday 17 November at 7pm.
