Over The Rainbow live events

This May, fans of BBC One's Over The Rainbow are invited to have a go at singing at a series of free events around the country.

The Over The Rainbow live events will give thousands of participants the chance to take part in their own musical theatre masterclass, with help from the BBC Singers, BBC musicians and some very special guests.

Jodie Prenger (winner of 2008's I'd Do Anything) will be on hand to offer inspiration and encouragement, and will be joined by some of the ex-Dorothys from the current TV show.

Jodie said: "If you've been singing along on your sofa this is your chance to have a go. Whether you're an enthusiastic amateur or an absolute beginner, we want to get you singing along. So go on – you've watched the Dorothys – now it's your turn to join in!"

The Over The Rainbow live events will take place in Leeds on Saturday 1 May, Glasgow on Sunday 2 May, London on Monday 3 & Tuesday 4 May and Cardiff on Sunday 9 May.

It doesn't matter if you've never sung in a group or in public before – the events are aimed at beginners and open to everyone.

For more information and to register for a place visit: bbc.co.uk/dorothy or call 0370 901 1227. Places are limited and will be allocated at random. The closing date for registering is 4.00pm on Monday 19 April 2010.

Notes to Editors

The Over the Rainbow live events are linked to BBC series Over The Rainbow. Tune in to the first live episode on Saturday 3 April 2010 on BBC One at 7.25pm.

At the events, participants will take part in a mass singing masterclass. They will learn singing technique and a range of repertoire from popular musicals. Each event will last around two hours and will culminate in a finale performance.

The events will be led by Tim Steiner. Tim is a composer, presenter and workshop leader and has created the events in collaboration with the BBC Singers.

For people who can't come to one of the events there will be a free singing booklet available to download from bbc.co.uk/dorothy. There is also a BBC website dedicated to singing activity: bbc.co.uk/sing

Tickets for the events will be allocated by random draw. Entering the random draw does not guarantee tickets. Each household can apply for a maximum of two tickets.

The events are being produced by BBC Learning in partnership with talkbackThames. BBC Learning campaigns offer opportunities for learning in the broadest sense, with the emphasis on active participation. Building on the interest generated by broadcast programmes, these campaigns encourage and enable people in communities throughout the UK to learn more through taking part in events and activities developed with expert partners.
