CBBC has taken home an impressive five awards, including two for Newsround – the only daily current affairs programme for young people – at the inaugural KidScreen Awards, it is announced, today Friday 12 February.
The new awards aim to pay tribute to outstanding content from around the world that entertains and engages the audiences.
Joe Godwin, Director, BBC Children's, says: "I'm truly delighted that CBBC programmes are being recognised globally for being original and inspiring to children everywhere.
"It's especially satisfying to win awards for really distinctive and hard-hitting factual and drama, which has always been, and always will be, a unqiue and central part of what BBC Children's does."
The Newsround Special – Gone took two awards: Best One-Off, Special or TV Movie 2010 in the Kids Category and Best Writing 2010 in the Creative Talent Awards.
Gone, a Newsround special documentary for CBBC, was a powerful and moving documentary which explored the issue of bereavement and how it affects children's lives. Presented by BAFTA award-winning presenter, Barney Harwood, it told the story of four children – all of whom have lost someone they love.
Dustbin Baby (Kindle Entertainment) won Best One-Off, Special or TV Movie 2010 in Family Category and Best Acting 2010 in the Creative Talent Awards.
A moving family drama, based on Jacqueline Wilson's novel, Dustbin Baby follows the story of a teenager who sets out to discover her origins and, along the way, discovers where she belongs.
Escape From Scorpian Island (The Foundation TV Productions), adrenalin-fuelled real-life adventure game for children, won best non Best Non-Animated or Mixed Series 2010.
CBBC also won the Children's Channel of the Year Award at the Children's BAFTAs in November 2008 and was named Children's Channel of the Year at the Broadcast Digital Awards in June 2009.
