Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones to host celebrity dance extravaganza for Comic Relief

Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones are set to host a brand new celebrity dance extravaganza for BBC One as part of this year's Red Nose Day campaign from Saturday 21 February 2009.

Let's Dance For Comic Relief is an exciting new live entertainment series which sees some of the nation's favourite celebrities pay homage to iconic dance routines in a bid to wow viewers with their moves. Donning their dancing shoes, they will fight for a chance to be crowned champion of the dancefloor.

The acts will be a mix of solo dancers, duos and groups. Each week celebrities will recreate a number of famous dances from movie classics such as Saturday Night Fever and High School Musical to pop classics such as Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) and Thriller (Michael Jackson).

The series will run over four weeks, comprising three heats and culminating in a spectacular final dance off on Comic Relief weekend. Each week viewers will vote for their favourite dancers until someone is crowned the Let's Dance For Comic Relief Champion on 14 March.

The celebrities will work with a team of top choreographers to master the dance moves and with a team of stylists to represent their dance icon's look. They will then take to the floor to give the performance of their lives in front of a live studio audience and a panel of experts.

Who goes through to the grand final is then up to the viewers and the panel. Proceeds from the voting will go to Comic Relief.

The show will be produced by Whizz Kid Entertainment for the BBC.

Jo Wallace, Executive Editor, BBC Entertainment, says: "I'm delighted to bring what will be a brand new entertainment format to the Comic Relief portfolio. It's exciting to have Claudia and Steve on board as presenters and the celebrities' iconic dances will have BBC One viewers glued to their screens!"

Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive of Whizz Kid Entertainment, said: "This latest commission builds on Whizz Kid's reputation for producing genuinely exciting live entertainment programming. Let's Dance For Comic Relief will offer viewers a combination of great talent, great music and great performances, and we are thrilled to be involved in something as important and worthwhile as Comic Relief."

Kevin Cahill, CEO, Comic Relief, said: "I am really excited about the format of this show and delighted that it is going to help us raise enthusiasm, awareness and most importantly cash for the Red Nose Day 2009 campaign."
