Nick Ross to present major new crime series for BBC One
|
BBC One has commissioned Mentorn Media and Films of Record to co-produce a new series presented by Nick Ross, it was announced today.
The three 60-minute programmes will follow Nick Ross in a journey of exploration to discover the truth about crime in Britain today and explore the reality behind the tabloid headlines, spending time with people who deal with crime on a daily basis, from victims to professionals.
The series will be supported by BBC Learning and a full online presence.
Commissioned by Richard Klein, Head of Independent Knowledge Commissioning, and Emma Willis, Commissioning Executive, each film will deal with a different type of crime, the Criminal Justice response to it, and alternative ideas to prevent it happening in the first place.
It will be Executive Produced for Mentorn by Sam Collyns and by Roger Graef for Films of Record.
Richard Klein said: "This revealing new series combines Roger Graef's extensive experience as a criminologist, Mentorn's reputation as producers of high quality investigative documentaries and Nick Ross's insight gathered from years working on crime programming."
Nick Ross said: "I can promise the series will throw up a lot of surprises.
"It'll challenge everything from how much crime there is and who does it, through to the purpose of the police and the courts and the millions spent on rehabilitation – and I'm pretty sure we'll show a host of new solutions."
Roger Graef, CEO of Films of Record and Executive Producer, said: "Nick and I have been making many of the same points about the truth about crime and how to reduce it for years.
The BBC now gives us a chance to explore this in depth and share the results across many platforms.
"This is proper public service broadcasting in a genuine 360 degree form. It's a very exciting opportunity that should reach a great many people who feel fearful and confused by conflicting claims by politicians and the media."
Mentorn's Executive Producer, Sam Collyns, said: "By filming at the coal-face of the fight against crime, Nick will shed new light on how it is that the statistics suggest crime rates are falling yet, paradoxically, fear of crime has never been higher.
"Crucially, the series will show what else can be done to prevent crime: how we – the public and audience – can improve the quality of our lives and better protect our houses, streets, towns and cities from crime… and the fear of crime."
