Ben Stephenson appointed Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning

Jana Bennett, Director BBC Vision, today appointed Ben Stephenson as Controller, Drama Commissioning.


Ben Stephenson joined the BBC as BBC Vision's Head of Development, Independent Drama in 2005 going on to become Head of Drama Commissioning in spring 2007 working alongside outgoing Controller, BBC Fiction, Jane Tranter.


In the last year alone Ben has been a key driving force behind such critically-acclaimed pieces as Lark Rise To Candleford, The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, God On Trial, Oliver Twist and Tess Of The D'Urbervilles.


Ben Stephenson will now be responsible for all drama commissioning decisions working closely with the four channel controllers.


His appointment will be effective from 22 September 2008.

Jane Tranter said: "Ben has worked in drama commissioning at the BBC for the past four years, during which time he has made a significant and invaluable contribution.


"He is and has been a great colleague and I am certain that, working with the BBC's fantastic team of editorial heads, BBC drama will be encouraged on to ever greater heights of excellence."


Ben Stephenson said: "Drama on British television has never been in better shape. I am very excited to be able to play my part in ensuring the BBC's offerings continue to be as rich and diverse as possible.


"The drama team have a great understanding of the wide range of content that our audiences enjoy. They work with some of the world's greatest talent in the indie and in-house drama communities.


"Working with them in the future to continue to push creative and artistic boundaries is something I am looking forward to immensely."


Ben Stephenson will join the BBC Vision Senior Management team and Vision Editorial Group as a result of the appointment.


He will report to Jane Tranter's successor as Controller, Fiction who is due to be recruited in the coming months.


Notes to Editors


Jane Tranter will be stepping down from her current commissioning role with immediate effect to be replaced by Ben Stephenson but will continue to add strategic input to BBC Fiction as a whole until she leaves at the end of the year.
