Abraca-Deborah! Debbie McGee joins BBC Radio Berkshire
Listeners to BBC Radio Berkshire will be guaranteed a bit of magic on Sunday mornings as celebrity Debbie McGee will be adding a bit of sparkle to the station's weekend line-up.
Having been the glamorous stand-in for Berkshire favourite Henry Kelly and brought a bit of glitter to Andrew Peach's newspaper reviews, Debbie is now set to become a station regular when she launches her new programme on Sunday 8 June 2008, from 9am to 12 noon.
Promising a light-hearted mix of entertainment, showbiz guests and tales straight from the people of Berkshire, Debbie hopes to bring a "bit of a laugh" to her adopted county's weekend lie-in.
Talking about her new opportunity at BBC Radio Berkshire, Debbie said:
"I absolutely loved doing radio, it is great fun and everyone at the station has been really supportive. I am just going to be myself and hopefully people will like it.
"It is great to be doing a show about a place that both Paul and I love. This is a real opportunity for people to get to know the real me."
And having to dedicate her Sunday mornings to getting Berkshire up and about certainly won't be a challenge:
"I've led a very busy life and am used to working seven days a week so working on a Sunday is kind of normal.
"On a Sunday you want to think about more light-hearted issues and have more laughter. I love to have a joke, I can be serious but life is about having some giggles. Of course if there are serious issues that need to be addressed then we will but you do need to have some fun in your life."
Debbie and her husband Paul Daniels have lived in Berkshire for 11 years. As well as being a celebrated entertainer, Debbie still finds time for hobbies.
Along with being a keen gardener, Debbie is also a fully qualified helmsman, and so the river plays a large part in her love of the county.
Welcoming Debbie, BBC Radio Berkshire Managing Editor Marianne Bell said:
"Debbie's love of life and Berkshire is perfect for our Sunday morning programme. She brings a tough of glamour, but you are just as likely to bump into her doing her weekly shopping in our local supermarket.
"She is warm and empathetic and I know people will want to call her to share their stories."
Debbie's career has spanned the widest range of show business genres, incorporating classical ballet, modern dance, cabaret, theatre, television and films.
And while Debbie continues to perform with her husband Paul Daniels she now has many credits in own right as a presenter, a performer and an after-dinner speaker.
She was also Artistic Director and choreographer of classical ballet company Ballet Imaginaire.
