The Shadow In The North
Character profiles
Sally Lockhart
Sally may only be 20 years old, but she's a remarkable young woman – beautiful, with extraordinary strength and determination. She was orphaned when her father, the shipping agent Matthew Lockhart, drowned when his ship went down in the South China Seas.
Sally and her father were very close. Her upbringing was pretty eccentric: he taught her all about book-keeping, how to fire a pistol, and how to speak Hindustani like a native. Not exactly the ideal accomplishments of a Victorian lady but skills that Sally has found useful in her new career as a financial consultant.
However, when one of her clients loses all her savings on an investment Sally recommended she vows to get to the bottom of the puzzle surrounding the sinking of the Ingrid Lind ship and recover her client's funds. Sally's reputation is everything.
Axel Bellman
The most successful, not to mention wealthies,t businessman in Europe and owner of Northstar Castings – the holding company behind Anglo Baltic who operated the Ingrid Lind.
He is ruthless to the core and will stop at nothing to get what he wants – even swindling old ladies. He has designed and manufactured a prototype of the deadliest, most evil weapon in the world and fully intends to reproduce the "Regulator" for sale around the world.
When he meets Sally he knows he has met his match and will stop at nothing in order to possess her – even murder.
Frederick Garland
Frederick is a photographer, boyishly handsome in his late 20s with straw-coloured hair and good-natured features.
He is in love with Sally but finds his feelings are unrequited. He becomes frequently frustrated as she continues to refuse his offer of marriage.
He can never be angry with Sally for long and soon finds himself embroiled in the same mystery that Sally is attempting to unravel.
As well as running a small photography studio and shop in Holborn, with his Uncle Webster, with his feisty sister Rosa he also runs a sideline as a private investigator with Jim Taylor.
Jim Taylor
Jim is in his late teens, with a slightly unkempt and grimy appearance. He's lively, intelligent and, above all, a true and loyal friend to Sally.
In his spare time, Jim loves reading Penny Dreadful comics – and has tried writing one himself. When he takes it to Mr Bram Stoker he is told there isn't a market for murder mystery!
He's a great amateur detective too and it is during this meeting with Stoker that he helps magician, Alistair Mackinnon – the Wizard Of The North, escape some murderous-looking thugs at the theatre – thugs who it would appear are employed by the evil Axel Bellmann.
