BBC Three presents West 10 LDN
On Greenside, you live life by your own rules...
BBC Drama and BBC Three today announce West 10 LDN (working title), a vibrant new drama featuring Noel Clarke (Doctor Who, Kidulthood), Ashley Walters (Hustle, Bullet Boy), and Ashley Madekwe (Drop Dead Gorgeous).
West 10 LDN, based on short stories by Courttia Newland, was developed by award-winning Kudos Film and Television (Life On Mars, Spooks, Hustle), with director Menhaj Huda and writer Noel Clarke – the team behind the acclaimed no-holds-barred film Kidulthood.
Set on the Greenside estate in west London, West 10 LDN is a high-velocity drama which delves into the intense and passionate lives of the teenage generation who live there.
Love, danger, drugs, family, violence and tenderness power the drama. Told with warmth and wit, and a blast of originality, these are stories from the inside, about a world only ever seen on TV when a shooting makes news headlines.
Eighteen-year-old Elisha (Ashley Madekwe) causes trouble from the moment she arrives. When her belongings are stolen, Elisha will risk anything to get them back, because she has secrets to hide. Her search leads us into Greenside, as Elisha finds herself facing the estate's bright lights and dark heart alike.
The characters she meets are rich and varied: Lacey (Ashley Walters) and Michael (Noel Clarke), are both legends in their own neighborhood; Elisha's feisty, funny, and fearless new friend Val (Chi Kolo); Val's volatile boyfriend Ray (Fraser Ayres, The Smoking Room); and Orin (Duane Henry), who, like Elisha, is also on a mission.
Orin is a good guy, a charmer, but he wants to be a big player on the estate. When a gang stashes a kilo of hash right before his eyes, he feels he has only one option. To steal it. He and his best friend Will find themselves with the best hash they've ever had – and in more danger than they've ever known.
When Orin and Elisha meet, they clash. But the spark between them is undeniable – and by the end of the film one will owe their life to the other.
Noel Clarke, who both stars in the film and wrote the script, comments: "I don't think it's exaggerating to say there's never been anything like this on TV before.
"And yet there are elements of this world that are familiar to a whole generation, and the themes themselves – of survival, of love, of family – are universal. Courttia's book is so powerful and moving, I'm really hoping the script does it justice."
West 10 LDN is commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC Three, and Jane Tranter, Controller of BBC Fiction, and is produced by Kudos Film and Television in association with Stealth Films.
Based on the acclaimed short stories Society Within by Courttia Newland, it is produced by Tim Cole and Executive Produced by Derek Wax (Sex Traffic) and Menhaj Huda.
Filming started last week in West London.
The 60-minute drama is one of six bold and engaging new dramas for BBC Three which will transmit early next year.
The others are: Being Human, Phoo Action, The Things I Haven't Told You, Mrs In-Betweeny, and Disconnected.
