Tatton garden competition winners announced

BBC Radio Manchester has announced the four winners of its competition to design a garden for the RHS Flower Show at Tatton.

Radio Manchester, in conjunction with Woodford Park Garden Centre, Cheshire, asked groups and individuals to come up with a design for the BBC Manchester themed garden – Come To Your Senses.

The garden takes the form of five pods, with each bringing together a collection of plants that defines one of the senses – taste, touch, sight, sound and smell. Horticulturalists from Woodford Park designed the sound pod.

That left listeners to Radio Manchester, viewers of North West Tonight and readers of bbc.co.uk/manchester with the chance to design one of the other pods and to nominate where it should go after the show – a school, the community or a charity project in Greater Manchester or Cheshire.

Richard Fair from Radio Manchester said: "We wanted our garden at this year's RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park to be something that the community could get involved in creating, and would go on to have a life in the community after the show. We have some fantastic entries and we were really impressed with the level of creativity and imagination shown in all of the winning designs."

The budding designs were judged by the BBC, Woodford Park Garden Centre and the RHS.

Annie Martin from Woodford Park Garden Centre says: "We were inundated with fantastic entries.

"Each of the winning designs perfectly captured the essence of the sense they were representing with the use of some amazing plants from all around the world. They all exceeded our expectations and visitors to this year's show will be delighted with their creations."

Over the next few days, the winners will be working with Woodford Park Garden Centre to get the gardens ready for the RHS Tatton Flower Show.

The winning designers are:

  • Sight: Paula Revill from Chorlton
  • Scent: North Reddish Junior School, Stockport
  • Taste: Stamford Park Junior School, Hale
  • Touch: Heather Vaughan from Cheshire

Photo opportunity: The winners will be at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park on Wednesday 18 July at 11am in the central showground near the BBC area, by the bandstand. If you would like to send a photographer please contact the BBC Manchester Press Office.
