BBC Sports Personality Of The Year event grows with support of Robinsons

BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, which became a public event for the first time in 2006, will be staged in 2007 with the support of its first event sponsor following the announcement of a two-year deal with Robinsons.

BBC Sport also announced today that the event will be held at The NEC, Birmingham, for the second year running.

Thanks to the Robinsons sponsorship, the audience capacity this year will increase by 3,000 to a total of 8,000, ensuring more members of the public will be able to attend the live show.

Roger Mosey, Director of Sport, BBC, said: "We are delighted to welcome Robinsons as our first event sponsor as this means we can increase the ambition of the event while providing good value to our licence fee payers.

"Robinsons have a long track record of sponsorship and we are confident they will be an enthusiastic partner and will help us develop the event.

"We also look forward to returning to The NEC where we enjoyed a very successful initial year away from the studio at TV Centre."

The BBC Sports Personality Of The Year event supported by Robinsons also includes exclusive sponsorship of the Unsung Hero Award category, which recognises and rewards outstanding contribution by individuals to local level grass roots sport.

Andrew Marsden, Marketing Director of Britvic, said: "We are very proud that Robinsons will be the first ever sponsor of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event.

"The Unsung Hero Award, in particular, is a great fit for the Robinsons brand and we will be focusing our efforts on adding value to this element of the sponsorship."

Paul Thandi, Chief Executive, NEC Group, said: "This really is tremendous news – it highlights The NEC's reputation as a national venue with the capability to host extraordinary, live broadcast events, which wow audiences both in the venue or watching at home on television.

"By extending the reach of one of its most high profile broadcast events out into the regions in this way, the BBC has once again offered the West Midlands a chance to showcase its outstanding hospitality and professionalism to the rest of the UK."

Nominations for the Unsung Hero Award can be made at from Thursday 14 June until Saturday 3 November 2007.

The 2007 awards will be covered live on BBC One on Sunday 9 December. Programme, ticket and voting details will be announced nearer the time.
