Betsan Powys

The Chair is back!

Mastermind's iconic black leather chair is returning to Wales! Betsan Powys is ready to ask the questions but there's one vital ingredient missing - the contestants.

Do you want to be a part of one of the world's most famous quiz programmes? This is your opportunity to take part in Mastermind Cymru 2007, a Welsh language version of the long-running series.

Betsan Powys is looking forward to meeting the next wave of contestants.

"Give it a go - that's my advice to anyone who enjoyed the series last year and managed to answer the questions from the comfort of their own homes," she says.

"So many people have come up to me and said that they're keen to take part after watching others competing and succeeding in the chair - this is their big chance.

"Your specialist subject doesn't have to be academic - it can be a lighter subject so long as it has plenty of substance and you know your stuff.

"I hope to see lots of women competing this year and people with various interests from all corners of Wales. You never know where the next Mastermind Cymru will come from."

The Mastermind Cymru 2006 champion came from Llangefni. Policeman Emyr Rhys Jones enjoyed the experience of competing and winning the honour of the title.

He says: "I was nervous when I first sat in the chair, but Betsan is fantastic at making you feel at ease. It's not as scary as it looks.

"I'd encourage anyone with a specialist subject to take part. It's a lot of fun and winning the title is an incredible experience."

Emyr's an old hand by now, but has he got any tips for those sitting in the chair for the first time?

"Concentration - that's the most important thing. Forget about everyone around you and focus on the questions. Don't panic if you can't answer a question. Just say 'pass' and move straight onto the next."

To take part in Mastermind Cymru 2007 you need to be a Welsh speaker aged 16 or over.

You must choose three specialist subjects, take part in a short audition and be available to attend the studios in Cardiff in June.

One round of questions will be on your specialist subject and the second round is general knowledge.
