BBC Parliament expands subtitling

The BBC today announced an expansion of its subtitling operation for BBC Parliament from the current 450 hours of output per year to 810 hours.

This will enable the channel to offer the most important of the events in Parliament in a subtitled version.

BBC Parliament is the first parliamentary channel in the world to offer access services for the hard of hearing.

Innovative live subtitling technology is already in use to give a constant on-screen subtitling service for the key programme The Record, and for the first two hours of the Commons business.

The move follows representations to the BBC by parliamentarians and the RNID.

The channel is broadcast on Freeview, satellite and cable.

The subtitling service is used both by viewers with hearing difficulties and in workplaces where there is monitoring of the work of Parliament.

BBC Parliament shows all of the work of the House of Commons live and replays the sessions of the House of Lords the next day.

The Record (at 9.00am and 11.00pm) offers a half-hour review of the most important events from the day in Parliament.

The channel reaches a monthly audience of between 750,000 and a million viewers.

Notes to Editors

The subtitling service on BBC Parliament is a voluntary commitment made by the BBC. The channel's audience share is below the threshold at which broadcasters are obliged by Ofcom to offer subtitles.
