I'm With Stupid

Steve Edge as Sergeant Swithenback

I'm With Stupid by Danny Peak

Steve Edge plays Sergeant Swithenback

Steve Edge is no stranger to comedy having appeared in Phoenix Nights, That Peter Kay Thing, Mike Bassett Football Manager and Peep Show.

His character Sergeant Swithenback is the local policeman in I'm With Stupid. He's very fond of Jean and makes any excuse to go to Bramble Lodge to see her rather than solving crimes.

Steve says: "He may as well be on site security so he can see her 24/7.

"He also loves eating – he's always scoffing doughnuts or chocolate."

He says the production team made him eat some dubious things as well: "They made me eat a very dodgy curry at one point... made of quorn – disgusting!"

Like some of the other cast members, Steve also recalls the freezing weather conditions during filming in Manchester in winter but says that it was "great fun" and that the cast became really close during the six weeks of the shoot: "We would just enjoy each others' company".

Originally from Staffordshire, 33-year-old Steve went to 'normal' school. He didn't really think of becoming an actor when he was growing up, but stand-up comedy was his passion.

In 1995 he moved to the North West and did a course in Media Performance at Salford University.

It was there he first met Peter Kay who was on the same course in the year above him.

"I was a stand-up for 10 years on the professional circuit and then gravitated towards acting. I was in Midsummer Nights Dream in 1997 and Peter Kay came back to watch it.

"After the show he took me to a quiet stairwell and said if he ever wrote a sitcom I could have a part in it. I didn't think much more of it. Then a few years later he called me up to appear in That Peter Kay Thing."

Steve loves watching comedy when he can and is a fan of old classics like Rising Damp and says he would have loved to have worked with Leonard Rossiter.

When he's not working Steve can usually be found writing and is currently working with another comedian on a new project.
