I'm With Stupid

Cherylee Houston as Dorothy

I'm With Stupid by Danny Peak

Cherylee Houston plays Dorothy

Straight talking Dorothy is played by Cherylee Houston. Originally from Morecambe, she moved to Manchester in 1994 at the age of 20 to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and did a degree at the Arden School of Theatre.

Cherylee describes her character Dorothy as "having a lot of front" and "being a bit of a tomboy in attitude but still being a girl at heart as she likes to get dressed up and look nice."

She says: "She doesn't suffer fools gladly – she's a strong woman and quietly wise. She likes to get one up on the boys, and often she does!"

Previous to I'm With Stupid, Cherylee appeared alongside Paul Henshall (Paul Ball) in the BBC ONE drama A Thing Called Love. Her first TV appearance was in BBC ONE's daytime soap Doctors and she has also appeared in Casualty, Holby City and Little Britain.

I'm With Stupid is what she calls her first big TV role.

Cherylee feels that it is still difficult for disabled actors to get castings and so is delighted that I'm With Stupid came along.

"It's different to anything else on television and uniquely 50% of the cast are disabled. But the story is great – it explores the friendships between a diverse group of people in a humorous way."

She hopes that in the future opportunities for disabled actors improve, as roles for ethnic minority actors improved.

When she is not acting, Cherylee puts most of her energy into her theatre company The Big House Theatre Company which she set up with her friend to promote disability in acting. She is also writing a book.
