The Virgin Queen
Anne-Marie Duff and Tara Fitzgerald

The Virgin Queen

Starts on BBC ONE on Sunday 22 January at 9.00pm

Music

The opening title sequence uses lyrics based on a poem purportedly written by Queen Elizabeth I as noted in "Elizabeth I - Collected Works" edited by Leah Marcus, Janel Mueller & Mary Beth Rose.

It is a late 17th century copy in the hand of Archbishop William Sancroft (held in the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford) - a version that was almost certainly copied from an early 17th century manuscript of the poem (now illegible because of water damage).

The poem doesn't exist in any known manuscript version dating to the lifetime of Elizabeth - but is almost certainly hers.
