Helen Boaden, Director of BBC News, today issued a statement about Radio 4 news presenter Nick Clarke.

The statement reads: "We have learned that Nick Clarke, presenter of The World At One on Radio 4, has been diagnosed with cancer.

"We're very sorry indeed to hear this news and send him and his family our very best wishes for a swift and successful recovery.

"Nick will be undergoing surgery which will involve the loss of a leg, but the prognosis is good and Nick plans to be back on The World at One in the summer.

"In the meantime the programme will be presented by Shaun Ley.

"We would ask everyone now to respect Nick's privacy - and that of his family - and to direct any further inquiries to the BBC."
