BBC ONE has a rich tradition of bringing the widest range of programming to its viewers.

Next month it is drama that will be at the forefront, as the channel throws open its schedule for a dramatic week of exciting programmes.

Casualty and Holby City have a heritage of tackling key social issues - and, following the success of the DoNation joint episode, the shows are reuniting for a special to look at the issue of youth violence in the community.

Meanwhile, the action is hotting up in Albert Square as the Mitchell brothers head back to Walford.

Finally, period drama returns in a unique and innovative way as Bleak House launches with an hour-long special before running in a twice-weekly pattern.

Peter Fincham, Controller BBC ONE, said: "We have got three very different dramas, playing this week, that emphasise the breadth and depth of what we have to offer on BBC ONE.

"Changing the scheduling of established favourites and the format for presenting period drama is exactly what I want BBC ONE to be doing: challenging our audiences with top quality programming."

The highlights for week commencing 24 October include:

Bleak House

Gillian Anderson, Denis Lawson, Charles Dance, Alistair McGowan, Pauline Collins and Johnny Vegas lead an all-star cast in a ground-breaking adaptation of Dickens' Bleak House, written by Andrew Davies.

The skilfully crafted thriller and passionate indictment of the legal system was originally written as a monthly serial for popular consumption.

Casualty@Holby City Special

BBC ONE's favourite medical dramas come together for a specially commissioned storyline that explores the issue of youth violence.

A routine A&E demonstration in a tough inner city school turns nasty when a pupil and a teacher come to blows over a shared girlfriend.

EastEnders – The return of the Mitchells

After an absence of nearly seven years, the Mitchell clan is finally reunited.

This week will see soap's most popular hard men, Phil and Grant Mitchell, return to the square to help out the family and settle some old scores.
