The British public has nominated their top five finalists in Top Gear's search for the Greatest Driving Song Ever, and Seventies rock rules.

Coldplay may be the hot band of the moment, but when it comes to music for the open road, the nation's favourites are a blizzard of dandruff and denim, with rockers such as Deep Purple, Steppenwolf beating off U2, The Prodigy and Nirvana to the final five.

The finalists are:

Radar Love Golden Earring 09011 98 63 63 1
Born to Be Wild Steppenwolf 09011 98 63 63 2
Don't Stop Me Now Queen 09011 98 63 63 3
Highway Star Deep Purple 09011 98 63 63 4
Bat Out Of Hell Meatloaf 09011 98 63 63 5

Over the next five weeks BBC TWO's Top Gear will feature a film about each of the nominees. Each film will include a background to the song and extra information.

To vote simply strap on your air guitar and call the number next to your favourite track.

Dial 09011 98 63 63 followed by number 1 for Radar Love, 09011 98 63 63 followed by number 2 for Steppenwolf and so on. All calls cost 10p.

The winner will be announced on Sunday 7 August.
