The BBC has secured the exclusive television broadcast rights for Into The West, Steven Spielberg's latest, highly anticipated, drama mini-series.
Produced by Turner Network Television (TNT) in association with DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg, the six by 90 minute mini-series will transmit on BBC TWO next year.
George McGhee, BBC Controller of Programme Acquisitions, says: "Following on from Band of Brothers and Taken, we're really pleased to continue our relationship with DreamWorks and the eminent Steven Spielberg to acquire this drama mini-series for the BBC.
"The scale and investment in this magnificent epic is something that we could not reproduce on the BBC, and we are delighted to be able to give viewers the chance to see it in the UK."
Speaking on behalf of DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg, Hal Richardson, Head of Worldwide Television Distribution, commented: "We are extremely pleased that the BBC has licensed our latest and most ambitious television project, continuing their commitment to bringing unique and quality entertainment to the UK audience."
A sweeping epic covering the period from 1825 to 1892, Into The West weaves together the compelling experiences of two multi-generational families - one pioneer and the other plains-dwelling Native American - each telling the dramatic stories of the development of the West from their distinct viewpoints.
The Wheelers are a Virginia family of wheelwrights making their trek westward in search of a richer life.
The other is a Native American clan led by a young apprentice shaman of the Lakota tribe whose way of life is threatened by the pioneers.
Set against the backdrop of history, this tale of the clash of two cultures, the rush to riches in a new land, and the building of a new civilisation features a sterling cast, panoramic cinematography and compelling story-telling.
Premiering on TNT in the United States from 10 June, Into The West stars Matthew Settle, Tonantizin Carmelo, Skeet Ulrich, Beau Bridges, Josh Brolin, Keri Russell, Sean Astin and Gary Busey.
