Tom tops Voice of Musical Theatre vote

Tom Solomon has been named the BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre for 2005 in a closely-fought contest at Cardiff's New Theatre.

Tom, who lives in London, impressed judges including Sondheim specialist Julia McKenzie; Mary Hammond, who runs the Royal Academy of Music's musical theatre course; and Gareth Valentine, most recently musical supervisor for Victoria Wood's Acorn Antiques West End show.

He performed three songs - Miss Saigon's Why God, Why?, Big News from Parade, and Shouldn't I Be Less In Love With You from the show I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.

But Julia McKenzie revealed the contest had been the closest of the three Voice of Musical Theatre competitions so far, with just one point separating the top two.

Tom wins £5,000 cash and broadcast engagements with the BBC.
