A new era begins for BBC Yorkshire today (Monday 27 September 2004) when it completes its move from Woodhouse Lane to St Peter's Square in Leeds.

The new building is a purpose built media centre housing the latest broadcast technology and open plan offices for staff working in TV, radio and online.

From tonight viewers of BBC's Look North will see Harry Gration and Christa Ackroyd presenting from a brand new studio.

Tamsin O'Brien, Head of Regional and Local Programmes, BBC Yorkshire, said: "In a way, this move is the end of an era for the BBC in Yorkshire but it's the beginning of a very exciting new one.

"Tonight's Look North will follow a dramatic weekend of engineers working through the night to literally unplug us at Woodhouse Lane and re-connect us down in St Peter's Square.

"Our new state of the art technology means different ways of working and a number of benefits to viewers.

"For example, picture quality will be higher and our range of news stories will be better as we have been able to free up more journalists to be out and about across the region."

Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd said: "I see this move as the BBC coming of age in the north.

"It's quite sentimental leaving Woodhouse Lane because of the history of TV in that building and the fact we made some great programmes there.

"On the other hand, we are going to a great part of Leeds, right next to the Leeds College of Music and the West Yorkshire Playhouse and we have a superb new building and cutting edge technology."
