1Xtra announces August 2004 activity

1Xtra has announced its broadcast plans throughout August 2004 which will include three live and exclusive Dancehall concerts through each weekend in August leading up to Carnival, plus a string of broadcasts during the 40th Notting Hill Carnival 2004.

 

The activity will highlight 1Xtra's commitment to live broadcasting and constitutes an unprecedented coverage of the Notting Hill Carnival, giving listeners the chance to experience the action from across the UK.


Dancehall In August


1Xtra has recorded some of the very best reggae dancehall from around the world and will broadcast it exclusively to listeners across three weekends in August on 1Xtra Live.

 

The broadcasts will include a concert from Sanchez, also Summer Jam, the biggest reggae festival in Europe live from Germany and hosted by 1Xtra's Viper G from Silver Star who is joined by huge acts like Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer.

 

The final Dancehall in August broadcast will be the VP 25th Anniversary Concert hosted by Seani B live from Miami with Elephant Man, Beres Hammond, Capleton and Sizzla amongst others.


1Xtra at 40th Notting Hill Carnival 2004


1Xtra returns to Notting Hill Carnival for the second year to broadcast live from Europe's biggest street carnival from Sunday 29 to Monday 30 August.

 

Over carnival weekend, 1Xtra's stellar DJs Machel Montano and DJ Slic (the hosts of Sunday night's Sounds Of Soca - the UK's only nationwide soca show), Rampage (breakfast show), G Money & Nesha (new drivetime show), Letitia SD (new weekend afternoon show) and Seani B will all be broadcasting live from the heart of the action.


Highlights of the weekend include a huge pre-carnival soca concert hosted by 1Xtra DJ - and Trinidad's own answer to P Diddy - Machel Montano.

 

The night (recorded on Friday 27 August) will be held at the Forum, Kentish Town, London and broadcast on 1Xtra Live on Saturday 28 August.

 

Machel is joined on-stage by his Xtatik Road Marching Band and soca superstars Destra Garcia, Maximus Dan, Shal Marshal, Timmy plus special surprise guests.

 

Then comes the (off-air, Friday 27 August, 2.00-6.00am) after-party from SE One Club in London.

 

The party will have two rooms of music from the PoisonUK DJ Crew providing the soca and 1Xtra's Seani B and Manny Norte mixing it up in the alternative room.

 

This will be the biggest soca show ever to be put on and broadcast in the UK to date.


On Monday 30 August, 1Xtra will host one of the three PoisonUK soca floats, Machel Montano will design and headline the 1Xtra float, joining him will be guests including Maximus Dan, Timmy and KMC, all alongside some of the most extravagant costumes of this year's carnival.

 

Also the '10 Year Carnival Veterans', Rampage, will be broadcasting from their Rampage Soundsystem tower which will once again be at the centre of the carnival route.

 

Meanwhile 1Xtra will set-up a radio studio from a secret location in the area for an exclusive invite–only carnival party and eight hour broadcast.


In addition, 1Xtra's Carnival website will be the one point-of-contact for Notting Hill Carnival across the entire BBC and will have tons of unprecedented content.

 

Throughout the day on Monday 30 August, 1Xtra will deliver news and vox pops beamed in from five locations that circle the entire carnival site, 1Xtra's news reporters will be going into and out of carnival and reporting back to the station.


August 2004 will herald the second year that 1Xtra has been on-air, listeners can expect some unrivalled live music to take them through summer’s hottest month.
