BBC pioneers mobile and broadcast interactivity through Java

For the first time in the UK BBC viewers can participate in a television gameshow using their mobile phones.

The new BBC ONE gameshow COME AND HAVE A GO... IF YOU THINK YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH pioneers the integration of Java mobile, interactive television and internet interactive platforms with television programmes to allow viewers to compete in real time with a live audience for a cash prize of a minimum of £30,000.

Players must download the COME AND HAVE A GO... Java application across WAP onto Java enabled phones on a weekly basis before the start of each show to participate.

The Java application is engaged via a registration code at the start of the programme.

Like viewers playing across other interactive platforms mobile players will have to register for their unique code each week prior to broadcast for the opportunity to win.

Real time interactivity through Java mobile is enabled by "timestamping" software developed by BBC New Media & Technology in conjunction with Developnet.

The software measures the timeframe each question is answered in to ensure Java mobile players compete for the jackpot under the same rules and restrictions as the studio teams.

At the beginning of each broadcast the user will briefly go online via the mobile to synchronise interactivity between broadcast and mobile devices.

Following each broadcast the user will send in their score and answers to see whether they have a high enough score for a chance to win.

If enough questions are answered correctly within the determined timeframe the player will receive a scorecode which must be registered for a chance to be one of three teams to be selected to play COME AND HAVE A GO... IF YOU THINK YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH in the studio the following week.

The player/team with the highest score has a chance to win the jackpot that evening.

Angel Gambino, Controller of Business Development and Emerging Platforms, said: "BBC New Media & Technology is continuously exploring the use of interactive mediums with broadcast.

"Recently we've broken new ground by using MMS interaction for the Johnny Vaughan show and now Java mobiles for COME AND HAVE A GO... to extend traditional broadcasting formats and give viewers a more immersive viewing experience."

COME AND HAVE A GO... IF YOU THINK YOU'RE SMART ENOUGH is a BBC co-production with Tailor-Made Films.

The format for the show has been devised by Tailor-Made Films in collaboration with The Chatterbox Partnership.
