My Family creator Fred Barron gets new BBC ONE series

BBC Comedy pioneers team-writing

Fred Barron, creator of the hit comedy My Family, is set to pen a new eight-part sitcom for BBC ONE.

Everything I Know About Men will be a team-written show which Fred Barron will "showrun" with a team of both new and established writers.

Everything I Know About Men focuses on the life and times of Rebecca "Bex" Atwell, a twenty-something secretary trapped in a world of "almost" - almost in line for a good job, almost a size 8 (okay size 10) and almost in a relationship.

Through her relationships with the men in her life - her commitment phobic boyfriend, intrusive father, narcissistic boss and a host of blind dates - Bex tries to figure out some age-old questions like " just what is it with men anyway?" and "how are intelligent women supposed to deal with them?"

Everything I Know About Men will be directed by Dewi Humphreys (My Family, Absolutely Fabulous).

Executive Producers are Sophie Clarke-Jervoise (Head, Comedy) and Kenton Allen (Editor, Comedy).

Fred Barron said: "With Everything I Know About Men I wanted to write an adult comedy about how completely differently men and women see the world... and each other.

"The fact that we get along at all with out cudgelling each other to death is one of life's minor miracles."

Joining Fred on the writing team are -

Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, credits include Peep Show (Channel 4) and Smack the Pony (C4)

Danny Robins and Dan Tetsell, creators and writers of We Are History for BBC TWO

Katie Douglas, winner of BBC Northern Exposure's Six Writers for Liverpool Competition and winner of the Liverpool Echo's Best Talent in Theatre Awards.

Sophie Clarke-Jervoise added: "Fred joined us at the beginning of this year to develop more team-written shows in the true American sense and this is his first series commission so it's a very exciting one for us.

"The scripts are very funny and it's fantastic to have so many talented writers working together in one room with such a great mentor."

Everything I Know About Men is currently casting and is due on air in 2004.

It is commissioned by Lorraine Heggessey, Controller BBC ONE, and Jon Plowman, Head of Comedy Entertainment.
