Sports Personality of the Year celebrates its 50th birthday

Sports Personality of the Year - BBC

This
year sees the BBC Sports Personality of the Year celebrating its
50th anniversary as it honours 50 years of sporting achievement.
As
well as continuing to be the definitive review of the sporting year,
Sports Personality of the Year will also be celebrating 50 years
of the programme.
Gary
Lineker, Sue Barker and Steve
Rider will be presenting the show, with many of the previous
winners appearing as guests.
Nominations
for this year's Sports Personality of the Year open at noon on Saturday
22 November.
Viewers
can vote by phone on 09011 110830, by texting to 81111 or via the
website - www.bbc.co.uk/sportspersonality.
Voting
for nominations closes at 6.00pm on Monday 8 December. Viewers can
also vote between 9.00 and 10.00pm during the actual live show on
14 December.
Simply
the Best: Sports Personality
Monday
8 December – Friday 14 December 2003
In
the week prior to the live show on Sunday 14 December, there will
be five special programmes called Simply the Best: Sports
Personality.

by Gary Lineker and one special guest they cover the following periods:

Each
half-hour programme will consist of ten films looking back at the
ten winning Sports Personalities of that decade.
At
the end of each programme viewers can vote for their favourite Sports
Personality from that decade.
At
the end of the series, the top five picked by the viewers will go
through to the final live vote to decide the winner of 50th Sports
Personality of the Year – the Golden Sports Personality.
The
vote for the nation's favourite Sports Personality of each decade
will open at the start of each show and close the following day
at 6.00pm, with each of the winners having an accompanying voting
number.
Monday's
show will start with the most recent winners from the last decade
and the programme will count down to the first ever winner featured
in Friday's programme.
During
the live show on 14 December, voting lines will open again between
8.00 and 9.00pm giving viewers a last chance to nominate their Golden
Sports Personality from the five finalists.
For
this vote there is a separate telephone number for each of the top
five winners.
The
finalist with the most votes accumulated over the week and on the
night itself will be crowned the winner.
Both
the Golden Sports Personality and Sports Personality of the Year
will be announced at the end of the live show.
