Louis,
Joe and Michael Jackson's nose
Louis
Theroux interviews Michael Jackson's father Joe in Louis, Martin
& Michael (BBC
TWO, Sunday 16 November, 9.00pm) and asks him the truth about his
controversial relationship with his famous son.
In
the extraordinary interview which is at various times hilarious,
fraught and disturbing, Joe reveals that he never beat Michael,
he only ever whipped him; that he doesn't believe his son is crazy;
and that he "can't stand" gays.
The
interview, conducted in a hotel room in America, is set up by Majestik
Magnificent, a man who claims he was at one time Michael's personal
magician and who is also present, and interjects frequently, throughout
the interview.
Louis
starts by quoting Michael as saying that he's so nervous of his
father that to this day he regurgitates when he sees him.
Joe,
encouraged by Magnificent, replies: "He regurgitates all the
way to the bank. That's right."
Louis
asks if that means he doesn't believe Michael or if it means he
doesn't care and Joe replies: "Do I really care. I really don't."
On
the subject of whether or not he beat Michael, Joe says: "I
never beat him. I whipped him with a switch and a belt. I never
beat him. You beat someone with a stick."
But
Michael does have his father's support when it comes to his nose.
In
one of the funniest moments in the interview he insists that Michael
can do what he likes to his nose and Michael would be upset if Joe
talked about his nose on the BBC.
At
this point Majestik intervenes to tell Louis not to ask any more
questions about Michael's nose otherwise the interview will be terminated.
Joe
tells Louis that he objects to the British calling his son Wacko
Jacko because in America if you call someone wacko it means they
are crazy and he says that Michael is actually very smart.
It's
when the subject of Michaels romantic life comes up, however,
that the interview gets really tense.
Louis
asks Joe if he wished Michael had a partner and when Joe asks what
he means by a partner, Louis replies he means a boyfriend or a girlfriend.
Majestik
blurts out: "What are you trying to say that Michael's gay?"
and insists several times that the camera is turned off.
It
isn't and Majestik goes on to say that the question is disrespectful
to Joe.
When
Louis asks why the question is disrespectful, Joe says: "Because
we don't believe in gays. I can't stand them."
Louis,
Martin & Michael is directed and produced by Will Yapp.
The
executive producers are Stuart Cabb and David Mortimer.
It
is a BBC Entertainment production for BBC TWO.
