BBC
Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year 2003
Marie
Macklin and Harry Sever have sung their
way to success in the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of
the Year Competition (broadcast on BBC Radio 2, Sunday 26 October,
8.00-9.00pm).

Marie
(15) from Wells and Harry (11) from Hedgerley in Buckinghamshire
beat off competition from hundreds of other youngsters to win the
titles of Radio 2 Choir Girl and Choir Boy of the Year respectively.
The
host for the grand final, held at All Souls Church in London, was
the composer Howard Goodall who is a former choir boy himself. A
composer of choral music, stage musicals and TV theme tunes, Howard's
TV credits include music for Blackadder, Red Dwarf and The Vicar
of Dibley.
Howard
presented the winners with their trophies and £500 each. They
also both received an award of £1,000 for their choirs –
Marie sings with Wells Cathedral and Harry sings with Winchester
College Chapel.
For
the competition Marie sang Just As I Am, Without One Plea and Ave
Maria (Bach/Gounod) while Harry sang My Song Is Love Unknown and
Agnus Dei from Mozart's Coronation Mass.
Among
the judging panel for this year's competition were John Scott, Master
of the Choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, mezzo soprano Sarah Walker,
Ken Burton, Artistic Director & Principal Conductor of the London
Adventist Chorale and Michael Wakelin, Executive Producer, Songs
of Praise.
