Andi Peters to head up BBC Television pop programming

Andi Peters is returning to the BBC in a newly created senior role - Executive Editor, Popular Music.

This new role gives him responsibility for developing and managing a wide range of music and lifestyle programmes aimed at the youth audience.

Andi will also take on responsibilities for a number of existing pop music shows including the UK and worldwide editions of Top of the Pops - the world's biggest pop music programme.

Andi Peters will have a central role in BBC Music Entertainment, the biggest producer of music programming in the country.

The whole Music Entertainment department is lead by Mark Cooper and produces over 200 hours of output each year.

This includes Top of the Pops, TOTP2, Later with Jools Holland, Trevor Nelson's Lowdown for BBC THREE, the BBC's coverage of Glastonbury, BBC FOUR's coverage of non-classical music and a raft of music documentary programming on subjects from Robbie Williams to The Rolling Stones.

Andi says: "I'm delighted to be returning to the place where I produced my first programme.

"The skills I developed there have stood me in good stead throughout my career and after an eight year gap from the BBC I'm looking forward to working with the new talent at the corporation."

Wayne Garvie, Head of Entertainment group, says: "Andi has a proven track record in developing new programming for the teenage market.

"From The Ozone to T4, no-one's got a better record of creating innovative and successful programmes for the young.

"Andi is a key appointment in the BBC's continued desire to engage and entertain this audience. We're delighted he's coming back home."

Andi's presenting career at the BBC began as the presenter of children's shows such as But First This, CBBC 2, The Ozone, The Travel Quiz, Take Two, EEK, Short Change and providing the links for children's programmes from the Broom Cupboard.

Prime time broadcasting included Good Fortune, Children in Need and the Smash Hits Awards - where he was also voted Top Personality on TV for two consecutive years.

From 1993 until 1996 Andi presented Live & Kicking on Saturday mornings and had by this stage moved into programme making - producing The Ozone and CBBC specials.

In 1996 Andi moved to LWT where he produced the Saturday night special An Audience With The Spice Girls, a Boyzone Special and Gladiators: Train 2 Win as well as presenting The Weekend Show and The Noise.

Andi was appointed Executive Producer, Music Programmes at LWT before moving to Channel 4 in March 1998 to become Commissioning Editor, Children and Young People.

While at Channel 4 he created and developed the successful youth strand T4 and oversaw a number of productions including Big Breakfast, Party In The Park 2001, the drama As If and reality series Shipwrecked.

He also presented a number of Andi meets... in depth interviews with the likes of Ricky Martin, Britney Spears and the makers of Toy Story 2 which was screened on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve - which resulted in Andi getting a cameo as a character in the movie itself.

Since leaving Channel 4, Andi has continued to Executive Produce programming, the most recent of which was An Audience With Kylie (ITV1) and Record of the Year (ITV1).

His recent presenting credits include Celebrity and Rich and Famous for ITV1.

Along side this new role he will continue to present television programmes and also his Hit Music Sunday radio show on the Capital Network.

The role is effective immediately and Andi will join the BBC full time on 1 September 2003.
