ABOUT THE BBC

BBC exhibition and book celebrate new architecture

A major exhibition, Building the BBC: A Return to Form, charting the BBC's new approach to commissioning architecture, will go on show at the Royal Institute of British Architects from 6 to 28 June 2003.

The exhibition coincides with the publication of a new book on the same theme by Nicola Jackson.

To celebrate the launch, Radio 3's flagship arts and ideas programme Night Waves will stage a debate - The Value of Architecture.

The debate examines the problems facing quality architecture today and takes place on Thursday (5 June 2003) at 5.00pm.

It will be chaired by Night Waves presenter and ICA Director Philip Dodd and panellists include Sir Richard MacCormac and Amanda Levete.

It will be broadcast on 12 June at 9.30pm to mark the beginning of Radio 3's year-long focus on architecture.

The BBC has placed architecture high on its agenda for the next decade and is currently developing a range of major new buildings around the country which are featured in the exhibition.

The BBC's flagship headquarters, Broadcasting House, is set by 2008 to become the largest live broadcast centre in the world in an innovative scheme by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard.

The 17-acre White City development by Allies and Morrison aims to integrate the BBC far more into the local community with a broadcast centre, offices and greatly increased public access.

In Glasgow, Pacific Quay is the site for the new home of BBC Scotland in an exciting new building by David Chipperfield that incorporates studios, offices and large public areas.

In Birmingham the BBC is relocating to the new Mailbox development in a scheme designed by Building Design Partnership.

Further schemes, including improvements to Television Centre in London and other projects around the country, will be announced in the future.

The exhibition is curated and designed by Wordsearch with 3D design by Block Architecture and is presented as part of Architecture Week 2003.
