EASTENDERS

Barbara Windsor leaves EastEnders early

Barbara Windsor has had to leave EastEnders early due to illness.

The actress, who plays Peggy Mitchell, was due to finish filming in early May, but as her condition has worsened, she is unable to film her final scenes.

She will return to the show in 2004.

Louise Berridge, Executive Producer, EastEnders said: "Barbara has been a real trouper in working on with the show despite her glandular fever, and her overriding concern throughout has been that the programme should not suffer.

"We are more than happy to accommodate her need to rest, and the entire cast and crew unite in sending her love and best wishes for a speedy recovery. We look forward to welcoming her back to Albert Square next year."

Barry Burnett, Barbara's manager added: "It is generally known that Barbara Windsor's condition of Epstein Barr, a strain of glandular fever, is an unpredicatable illness.

"Although Barbara was set to finish filming EastEnders on 2 May, the condition has flared up to such an extent that the probability is Barbara will be unable to fulfil filming commitments for the last month of her contract.

"She's is very much looking forward to sorting herself out this year and returning to EastEnders in 2004."
